 | Mexico City Warnings or Dangers | Tips 1 - 10 of 158 | | There are reports that the authorities are cracking down on taxi crime in Mexico City - I wouldn't be at all complacent about that. The best advice about picking up a cab in the street is DON'T. Hopping into one of those cute little green and white Volkswagens you see everywhere could ruin your holiday. At the airport take a registered airport taxi (yellow, booked and pre-paid inside the terminal); from your hotel or from a restaurant, get the desk to call you a radio cab and ask them to make a note of the licence plate number. If you must get a taxi in the street, make sure it's a radio cab - it will have an S in front of the licence plate number and an orange stripe on the plate. If in doubt - walk - all the way if necessary. Check your government's travel advice on crime in Mexico, take careful note and follow it.. This is not scare-mongering. Robbery - with violence - is all too common. We met a young Englishman who had been robbed at knifepoint within 20 minutes of leaving the airport terminal. He was still in shock, but he was lucky - all they took was his money. leyle Leave a Comment

...as my daughter used to call it when she was younger - and Mexico City's pollution is more often than not so bad that the name really fits. Altitude is another hazard. At some 2000 metres above sea level, the city's altitude combined with daytime heat (and sudden drops in temperature at night) and the aforementioned pollution can cause real problems, so take it easy for a day or so when you first get there - and leave the assault on the pyramids at Teotihuacan for a few days more if you can. We were lucky , and the days we spent here (mid-March) were clear and bright. I hope you strike it that way too. leyle Leave a Comment

With a little common sense Mexico CIty can be enjoyed greatly. Here are a couple of tips....First...AVOID drinking the local water, drink only bottled water !!!! or soda's or beer !!!! Avoid having drinks with ice !!! The ice is made from the local water and unless you want to spend yours days in Mexico City in the bathroom...STAY AWAY FROM IT !!!!!! Leave all your expensive jewerly home.....ask Don King and his $100,000 Rolex some one polietly took off his hand as he faced the barrel of a gun !!!!! and of course keep aware of your surrondings !!!!! Walk in pairs or groups, avoid Taxi's or the subway at night and you'll be just fine !!!! Leave a Comment

I asked four different locals about eating street food and three out of the four people I asked said they NEVER eat it. All of them said that a visitor should definitely never eat it, no matter how tempting it looks. You'll see locals eating food from street vendors and sometimes it looks pretty good. The prices are definitely cheap, but I would suggest avoiding it at all costs unless you want to spend the rest of your trip in the toilet. Leave a Comment

In most cities, catching a cab is the easiest and among the safest modes of transportation. *****Not in Mexico City.****** Some cautions: 1) Never accept a ride from a "taxi" that pulls up along a street. Don't even speak to a supposed taxi driver if the car doesn't look like a cab. 2) Don't hail a taxi that is traveling down the street. If you need to get a taxi on the street, call a "sitio" or authorized radio taxi. See the phone number below. Restaurants and shops can call cabs for you. Ask the person calling to get the car number of the cab they are sending. This way you can make sure that the cab that pulls up is really the one you're expecting. 3) Avoid the VW beetle taxis, even if they are licenced. These are frequently involved in robberies of tourists. While there are plenty of law-abiding cabbies driving these cars, why take the risk? You may be literally in mortal danger. Yes, brutally violent beatings and murders have occurred. You may be kidnapped and driven to an ATM machine and forced to withdraw funds. 4) Never take taxis that are parked outside nightclubs, restaurants, and the Belas Artes museum. The frequency of robberies is even higher among these. 5) Make sure the taxi has a large, laminated licence card visible inside the car. It has the driver's name and photo on it. Check to make sure the person driving and the person in the photo are the same. Also be sure that the taxi *looks* like a cab, with numbers painted on the white plastic roof, the words "sitio" or "taxi" painted on the doors, and with a meter. 6) All sitio taxis are metered. If the driver doesn't have a meter or if he says it's broken, don't ride with him. 7) Consider using a "turismo" taxi. These are more expensive than sitio taxis, but are the safest way to move around. They are unmarked and do not use meters. Ask at your hotel about arranging for a "turismo" car and driver. Forget the fact they drive terribly... Forget the fact they will probably try to cheat on you and collect more money... The problem with them is that not all of them are really taxi drivers but assaultants that will take you to a lonely place and take EVERYTHING of you... If you have to take a taxi, go to a hotel and ask for a "taxi de sitio" they will have the phone or stop a real taxi for you... If you HAVE to take one from the street, look for the big identity card that they SHOULD have in a visible place... Leave a Comment

Well... In the streets of this city you will find lots of food stands, very cheap, and the food looks quite good... But let?s be honest... How healthy can be 5 tacos for 3 pesos????? PLEASE do not eat on street stands unless you want to make a nice tour thru bathrooms around the city... THAT?S what is called "La venganza de Moctezuma"... We mexicans have already some kind of antibody for that... You dont... Leave a Comment

As a in a big city is normal that you get lost, if you get lost in a non touristic area and need assistance, don't panic and don't take out any map, go to a store or a place where you can take out your map and maybe if you feel like to ask for any directions do it. This is only a gernal precaution that you would take in any other city. I have to add that people tend to be very friendly and if they see you in problems they can help, ibut if you dont need any help and feel treded just thank and go to any store or a place where you can see people. Real Mexican food is a problem to many foreigners... why? Food tend to be spicy and sometimes if you eat more than two different dishes in one day, you can have a boom in your stomach. This is beacuse many people is not used to eat this kind of food, and I need to tell you that even if you tried ever some mexican food before, it's not the same, so, I warn that you should bring with you some stomach medicine just in case. Also there are plenty of places where you can eat food, be aware that the place looks clean and is not a place in the middle of the street, this places aren't clean enough and it's almost a guarantee you can be sick - So be careful, the best thing is to eat in a normal restaurant. When visiting, try not to take too much money, no expensive jewelry and only take what is essential to wonder around town. Try to avoid place where large crowds and small markets meet. Do not wear a wallet or carry a purse. If you need a watch, use one that is low profile and cheap. Learn the local languege and idioms. Only get on marked taxi cabs. If you need info on specific locations email me to get them. Leave a Comment
