Smelly Bugs

I was absolutely fascinated by these bugs. They typically are found sitting on various plants and trees. It's not clear to me whether they were sucking out the nutrients of these plants or just suntanning.

My ex-girlfriend's son warned me to be careful around them as apparently they set off a rather horrible scent that is reminiscent of urine.

If you happen to know anything more about these insects then please do let me know!
