Things to Do

Welcome to Mexico

Welcome to Mexico, Algodones

Craven05 Says:  There was no security when I crossed into Algondones, the US had border agents leaving, but Mexico had no one... As soon as I took two steps into Algodones a man leaning against a wall asked me "Do you want drugs?" then I said no, then he explains "legal drugs?" and I shake...

Time

Time, Algodones

Craven05 Says:  Its summer, so no snowbirds are visiting, and it was around 4pm when I took this picture, when everything starts to close. Go earlier and go on saturday.

Handicrafts

Handicrafts, Algodones

Craven05 Says:  When leaving I was approached by a couple of little girls selling these, I paid $6 total, which was probably too much. I felt bad for them so I bought them, but Americans spend alot of money in Algodones everyday so don't feel too bad for the people.

drugs, glasses... what do you come here for?

drugs, glasses... what do you come here for?, Algodones

mht_in_la Says:  The minute you cross the border, you are greeted by dozens of street vendors trying to sell you their pills."What drugs do you need?"I shook my head."Viagra?"I shook my head."Need glasses?"I shook my head."Dentists?"I shook my head."Then what do you come here for?"I...

Spray painters

Spray painters, Algodones

mht_in_la Says:  At a major intersection about 3 blocks from border crossing, you'll see these local spray painters. Their work requires them to wear a gas mask at all times, but they appear to be making a decent money for what they do. You can buy their paintings, or have them spray paint...

Border crossing

Border crossing, Algodones

mht_in_la Says:  Most American visitors to Algodones leave their car by the border and walk across to the Mexican side. Therefore there's no bumper-to-bumper car queues to wait. And the border crossing is quite a scene -- thousands of senior citizens carrying one another wobbling through...

local restaurant

Around Algodones there are many places you can eat. Some street vendors just sell fish or shrimp tacos in the dust (many roads are unpaved). Or you can try some of the local restaurants. The photo shows one of the better restaurants where you get to sit down and be served. It has semi-outdoor seating, and it's constantly filled. I didn't try and don't remember its name. I only bought a local beer to cool down under the hot sun.

Local Customs

Angry T-shirts

Angry T-shirts, Algodones

mht_in_la Says:  Many street vendors sell T-shirts -- angry T-shirts that is. The photo shown is just one of the examples. Many of them contain the F word and other insults. It's easy to see why the locals are angry and frustrated when their pride is being consumed by American snowbirds and...

Local art work

Local art work, Algodones

mht_in_la Says:  Besides the drug stores and dental/optometry offices, you can find art works handcrafted by local artists. The ones shown in photo are made of paper. They reminded me of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Mind you these art works are not cheap at all. The Mexicans know how...

Warnings and Dangers

Warning: Royal Dental

Warning: Royal Dental, Algodones

Tabak Says:  Went in to have a tooth removed. Big Mistake. Royal Dental has moved to a new office in the same building. She called me in to a room smaller than my clothes closet at home. The chair wasn't even bolted to the floor, so it wobbled every time I moved or she bumped into it....

Algodones. Street Stuff!

Algodones. Street Stuff!, Algodones

teresajgregory Says:  It is just a matter of life for some locals to sit on the streets and sell what I would view as nasty pornographic type items (too embarrassing to describe) and the people there just seem to laugh about it and the street children (who sell home-made jewelry) just take it all...

WARNING! DO NOT GO TO THE GREEN-DOOR IN Algodones

WARNING! DO NOT GO TO THE GREEN-DOOR IN Algodones, Algodones

artistgal Says:  Do not go to the Green-Door in Algodones Mexico, unless u want 2 be scammed out of ur money by the owner, & policia ( police ). The GreenDoor has a very bad reputation with the girls having H.I.V.! They don't regulate ANY of the girls health. There is NO health code. This...

the bars

the bars, Algodones

bsouth Says:  Algodones is a neet town to walk around in and shop, but there are a few things to watch out for. First, stay out of the local bars. Places like bar olimpico (the green door) and such are nothing more then dirty women for sale. While they tell you how safe it is, you really...

1. drug stores
2. dental offices
3. optometry offices
4. barber shops
5. art works

A typical American snowbird spends a day here to get their prescriptions filled, glasses and dental works done, get a haircut, have a relaxed meal, then shop some souvenirs before returning home.
