Hussong Cantina
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hussongs' isn’t just a bar. It’s a landmark People all over the world know about it. Hussong's was founded by Johann Hussong, a German Immigrant who came to the US at the age of 23 in 1886. In 1889 the discovery of gold south of the border lured him to Ensenada.

In 1890 he broke his leg and was taken to J.J. Meiggs’ cantina in Ensenada to recuperate. A few days later Meiggs attacked his wife with an axe. He was arrested and she took off for California. The day he got out of jail, Meiggs sold the bar to John Hussong and left to search for his wife.

At that time the cantina was located where Papas & Beer is now. However, the next door neighbors complained constantly about the noise, so Hussong moved his bar across the street, where it’s been ever since. In April, 1892 Hussongs’ Cantina was established.

Hussoung is the place where the Margarita was invented, back in October, 1941 by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. It was a special drink that he devised for Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German Ambassador to Mexico.

Hussongs hasn’t changed much in all these years. The dark green interior, wooden floors covered in sawdust and kitsch art on the wall never change. Mariachis come and go just like they always have. One this that has changed in the past 30 years is that the crowd is mellower with the younger tourists going to “Papas and Beer.”

    La Bufadora - Flea Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • As you walk to the blowhole you have a mile of road with shops, bars, street actors, and restaurants and then the Blowhole at the end of it all. The shops contain all kind of arts and crafts of the region Most are filled with all sorts of things you don't need. Best values are handmade crafts; worst values are sunglasses that will break later that week. Haggling is expected . Open air cooking smells will beckon you; fish tacos are a hit - eat up! Don't forget to try the famous "churros", a flour stick deep-fried and rolled in sugar. Get a cup of hot chocolate and dunk, the traditional way of eating a churro. Some of the street actors are pretty entertaining. One that sticks in my mind was a gentleman dressed in a very elaborate Indian dress and doing native dances.

We were delighted to find this museum of regional history just off the main tourist drag in Ensenada. It contains a permanent display of "People and Cultures of Meso-America" plus temporary exhibitons in the 1886 military headquarters, which served as the Ensenada jail until 1986. To us the most interesting part of the museum was exploring the old building itself, which was in use for a full century, first as a fort and later as a jail. The museum is free, but donations are appreciated.

La Bufadora (The Blowhole or Buffalo Snort)
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is one of the largest blowholes in North America, shooting the white froth 70+ feet in the air, after what looks to be a small swell, before turning into a thunderous roar. There are plenty of observation deck for the voyeurs who want different perspectives. If you stand directly behind it, you too can get wet.

La Bufadora (Punta Banda Peninsula) - A Legend
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Legend of the Whale Jail

A century ago, within easy sight of the blowhole, there was a whaling station below the bluff close to the water's edge. The whalers spun a yarn of a mother whale and her newborn calf returning to the Arctic from the breeding grounds at Scammon's Lagoon in Guerrero Negro, four hundred miles to the south. One night the baby whale slipped away to explore a mysterious under water cave in the cliffs of Punta Banda.
The following day the whalers in the camp saw small spouts rising mysteriously from the cave and heard the frightened sobs of the trapped baby whale. As years passed the spouts grew larger, his lamentations louder.
Legend says that the spout accompanied by a tumultuous crash emerging from the blowhole today is the spout and fulmination of a still trapped but now full-grown leviathan.

    Riviera del Pacifico
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Social, Civic and Cultural Center of Ensenada occupies the former Riviera del Pacifico, once a gambling casino and hotel. Today the building is used primarily for special functions, such as conventions, social events and occasional art shows.

The mansion, with its elegant Moorish-style architecture, detailed mosaics, intricate ironwork and extravagant chandeliers betrays its former use. It said that Al Capone's money built the casino, and it was a favored gathering place for wealthy Americans and Mexicans during the Prohibition era. Among the glamorous clientele were Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, Johnny Weissmuller and the Ali Kahn; Jack Dempsy once managed the casino. After the Mexican government outlawed gambling in the late 1930s, the building fell into disuse. It was nearly 40 years later before refurbishment began.

We enjoyed exploring the magnificent old structure, and were glad to tip a custodian who proudly gave us a "free" tour. There is much of interest to see: murals and historical photographs in the entry hall, a restored ballroom and gambling rooms, patio gardens and an impressive wooden Andaluz Bar. Historical plaques and monuments are scattered about the landscaped grounds.

Plaza Civica, or the Civic Plaza, is known locally as "Three Heads Park." This is because it features three giant golden busts of Mexican Heroes Benito Juarez, Miguel Hidalgo and Venustiano Carranza. The park contains a couple of other interesting monuments, and a large open space with a platform. On one of the days we were in Ensenada a free concert was being held there with a good band and singers. We stopped and enjoyed a few of the songs.

Sea Lions, Gulls, Pelicans and others birds have learned that they can get a free meal by hanging out at the harbor, along El Malecon near the fish market, and begging for scraps of fish. We spent an enjoyable half hour watching the locals feed the hungry creatures.
