Hussongs' isn’t just a bar. It’s a landmark People all over the world know about it. Hussong's was founded by Johann Hussong, a German Immigrant who came to the US at the age of 23 in 1886. In 1889 the discovery of gold south of the border lured him to Ensenada. In 1890 he broke his leg and was taken to J.J. Meiggs’ cantina in Ensenada to recuperate. A few days later Meiggs attacked his wife with an axe. He was arrested and she took off for California. The day he got out of jail, Meiggs sold the bar to John Hussong and left to search for his wife. At that time the cantina was located where Papas & Beer is now. However, the next door neighbors complained constantly about the noise, so Hussong moved his bar across the street, where it’s been ever since. In April, 1892 Hussongs’ Cantina was established. Hussoung is the place where the Margarita was invented, back in October, 1941 by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. It was a special drink that he devised for Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German Ambassador to Mexico. Hussongs hasn’t changed much in all these years. The dark green interior, wooden floors covered in sawdust and kitsch art on the wall never change. Mariachis come and go just like they always have. One this that has changed in the past 30 years is that the crowd is mellower with the younger tourists going to “Papas and Beer.” Leave a Comment Address: Ave. Ruiz #13nPhone: Tel. 011-52-61-78-32-10

 | | | | Riviera del Pacifico | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The Social, Civic and Cultural Center of Ensenada occupies the former Riviera del Pacifico, once a gambling casino and hotel. Today the building is used primarily for special functions, such as conventions, social events and occasional art shows. The mansion, with its elegant Moorish-style architecture, detailed mosaics, intricate ironwork and extravagant chandeliers betrays its former use. It said that Al Capone's money built the casino, and it was a favored gathering place for wealthy Americans and Mexicans during the Prohibition era. Among the glamorous clientele were Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, Johnny Weissmuller and the Ali Kahn; Jack Dempsy once managed the casino. After the Mexican government outlawed gambling in the late 1930s, the building fell into disuse. It was nearly 40 years later before refurbishment began. We enjoyed exploring the magnificent old structure, and were glad to tip a custodian who proudly gave us a "free" tour. There is much of interest to see: murals and historical photographs in the entry hall, a restored ballroom and gambling rooms, patio gardens and an impressive wooden Andaluz Bar. Historical plaques and monuments are scattered about the landscaped grounds. Plaza Civica, or the Civic Plaza, is known locally as "Three Heads Park." This is because it features three giant golden busts of Mexican Heroes Benito Juarez, Miguel Hidalgo and Venustiano Carranza. The park contains a couple of other interesting monuments, and a large open space with a platform. On one of the days we were in Ensenada a free concert was being held there with a good band and singers. We stopped and enjoyed a few of the songs. Leave a Comment Address: Blvd. Costero & MacherosDirections: Between the harbor and the downtown area.
