Music / Drinking, Tijuana
Hey"! Is this woman being attacked by the waiter?
No. Someone--me--has ordered her a 'Popper.' A Popper is a shot of tequila with 7-up--not too strong. The waiter holds a napkin under the chin, holds the glass to the lips until all is consumed then--gently?--shakes the head back and forth.
The exciting music of a Mariachi band embraces the essence of Mexico and its people. Characterised by lively rhythms and the sounds of violins, guitars, vihuelas (a five-stringed guitar) and a trumpet, a typical mariachi band will wear silver studded charro jackets and wide brimmed hats.
As an acoustic ensemble they do not need to be fixed in one place but can stroll from one area of a hotel or restaurant to another and even outside! Since one meaning of mariachi derives, it is thought, from the French word 'marriage' a Mexican band could be highly appropriate for a wedding or special event
The legal drinking age in Tijuana (and Mexico) is 18 in contrast to 21 in California.
No wonder that quite many U.S. young folks (18-21 yo) go to Tijuana to taste booze forbidden at their age in their hometowns - especially in weekends.
Hmm... is it legal anyway? Can they come back to the USA... a little drunk?
There is "HAPPY HOUR" in many pubs located mainly in Avenida Revolucion.
What's that? It's an hour or... a few hours (usually 6-8 pm or later) or rarely even the full day when some (especially local) drinks and/or beers are sold at half-price. They often write: 2 x 1 = two (beers, drinks) for one (price). And it's usually Margarita and draft Mexican beer (Corona).
Hmm... it's a world-wide custom nowadays, I suppose. Although unfortunately there is no "happy hour" in my hometown (yet!). What about happy hour in your area?
There are people who invite you to the restaurants in Avenida Revolucion - how to call them in English?
They just stand in front of them and try to pay your attention, smile and say welcome amigo or something those lines. Sometimes they look a little strange and... not Mexican, I suppose :-).
I noticed that many pubs/discos, in la Revo especially, are opened till... look at my picture. Hmm... till the last costumer, I suppose :-))). Sometimes maybe till sunrise - am I wrong?
It's not California or the USA at all with pub opening hours specified by state law.
Which Tequila I recommend ....
Herradura Seleccion Suprema- It truly is SUPREME! I never thought I would taste a tequila smoother than Reserva de la Familia but Suprema is absolutely incredible! Unrivaled in smoothness and delicacy yet full bodied in flavor..
Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia- An awesome tequila. Rich, full bodied and yet incredibly smooth with a great bouquet.
Patron anejo- For the price it's my favorite tequila. Smooth and light on the palate.
Chinaco anejo- A little pricier than Patron and fuller in flavor but also very smooth.
Porfidio anejo- Another very smooth tequila and for the price I prefer it over Porfidio's single barrel anejo although head to head, with price as no option, the single barrel anejo is better.
