Plane: Rodriguez Field
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rodriguez Field is Tijuana's International Airport. The city has grown rapidly in the last 30 years or so and now has a population of well over 700,000 people. However, despite its size, you'll probably fly into San Diego's Lindbergh Field (airport code: SAN).

    Plane: From International destinations
If you want go Baja California from outside of Mexico (example, Europe) by plane, is more cheaper go first to Los Angeles or San Diego than Mexico City. They are more near from Baja California and you can take the bus to get to Tijuana the first city at the border. Is more cheaper than taking a plane from Mexico City.

The unique excepcion is you are coming from South America.

    Plane: International airport of Tijuana
Living in Los Angeles we never take a plane to Tijuana but we have found that if we drive to TJ, we can get a cheaper flight to other parts of Mexico.
My sister in law Irma has a big family and they will drive or take a bus to TJ and then get their flight out of there to Durango or Morelia or Leon or whereever they will be traveling to. Sometimes they have been able to save $200-$250 or more per person than if they had flown out of the States.

Since the majority of people going to Tijuana are coming from the San Diego area, it may be useful to know that from most hotels / motels there is a bus that will take you to a trolley station. The south bound, Blue Line Trolly ends in San Ysidro, within walking distance of the border to Tijuana, Mexico.

The time it takes the trolley to travel from it's northern point, the San Diego Mission to the southern end is about an hour. Depending where you board the trolley you can guess how long it will take to get to the border.

If you are not familiar with public transportation in general, the phone number listed here will supply you with the nearest bus stop or trolley station to your lodgings.

It is possible to take the SD Trolley all the way to the boarder, then walk across into Tijuana. However, I suggest that getting off at the Beyer Station and taking the Transportes El Volante bus across the border and into downtown Tijuana to the 7th street area will make the trip much easier and save lots of walking.

    UPDATE:

El Volante is no longer offering this service from the Beyer Station. However, at the end of the SD Trolley line at the border, you will have to walk across the bridge and on the north side of the street (at the west end of the bridge) you will see buses offering a shuttle ride into Tijuana.

Tour Bus / Bus: Without A Car!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Transportes El Volante

A little known fact--except by the local Mexicans traveling to and from Tijuana--is Transportes El Volante. This bus will by-pass the walk from the border to downtown. Transportes El Volante It will take you all the way into town for $1.75 One Way or $3.00 Round Trip--children under five ride free.

Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. a bus leaves about every 20 minutes. To get on this bus, take the Blue Line Trolley to the Beyer Street Station where you will see the white and red busses lined up. They will take you across the border and have stops on Avenida Madero--one block east of Revolucion--at First Street, Fourth Street and Seventh Street..

The return trip pick-ups are at the same drop-off points.

A decision to take one of these busses should also include the decision to accept what comes along with inexpensive travel Mexican style. Each bus is an old rattling school bus, not comfortable and the clientele is quite an interesting variety. They may not leave on time, but it is IMO, that the walking it saves is well worth the price!

If this seems a solution for you, take the San Diego Trolley Blue Line to San Ysidro and get off at the Beyer Boulevard Station, this is where you'll find the El Volante busses.

    Update:

It seems that the Law has caught-up with El Volante?

Well, I don't really know, but they seem not to be running buses from Beyer Station any longer. However, there are buses that will take you into Tijuana, Mexico that can be found near the San Ysidro Trolley Station. As soon as I get the exact info I will share it here. The general idea of how these buses work is basically like that of El Volante so I leave the details in for now.

  • There are a few car rental agencies in San Diego that will allow you to take your rented car into Tijuana, however, another consideration is to rent a car in Tijuana.

Here is a list of Tijuana car rental agencies. If this is an option you're interested in, just take a taxi from the border to the rental agency of your choice.

Decided to drive across the border and around the city of Tijuana? A brave thing to do. Well, not really. Driving in Tijuana isn't much different from driving around any other city in a country one is not familiar with.

I've driven in Tijuana since I was 18 and never had an accident or any other problem. I've been stopped by the police twice, once for a broken tail light and once for running a red light.

Both times the police were respectful and on the "running the red light" situation, it was many years ago when "mordida" was a fact of life in Tijuana. I ended up "Bribing" the cop. I simply asked if I could pay the ticket to him at that time, as I was in a hurry to get home, didn't want to go all the way back to the Police Station to pay it. He gave me the price, I paid and he looked very shocked when I asked for a receipt. That's the moment I realized that I had bribed him. Silly me.

You should know it is against the law to offer bribes to any police officials in Mexico and you could be prosecuted.

Tickets issued in Tijuana can be paid in the U.S. with a check or money order made out to: H. Ayuntamiento de Tijuana, 416 West San Ysidro Blvd. Suite “L”, No. 725, San Ysidro, CA 92143.

    TO:
    1. There is an airport in Tijuana so you could fly in, but driving across is the most common way to get there.

    2. Another way is to take the Trolley from San Diego to the border, walk across, then take a taxi to Revolution Avenue--the main street--make sure you settle on the price before getting in the taxi and don't be surprised if you have to share the taxi with others.

    3. For those faint of heart--the driving can get rather hectic--there are local tour buses working out of San Diego, offering organized tours:
Gray Line or San Diego Tours offer tours starting at $26.00.

You may drive to the border, park on the US side and for $2.00 take a Mexicoach/Five Star Tours bus,(619) 232-5049, which leaves every 15 minutes, from the US parking lots and Trolley station, to downtown Tijuana.

    GETTING AROUND:
    1. Driving is the best way of getting around.
    2. A taxi.
    3. Some people like to walk.

ok, there are several ways to get into Tijuana. If you are traveling by car I recomend to park the car in San Ysidro and then pick up a bus for just $1.5 in front of the new mall. This bus will drop you in Avenida Revolucion, down town Tijuana.
Another way to arrive to Tijuana from San Diego is by trolley which stops in San Ysidro and then by bus as I said before or walking.
It's better if you go by bus to Revolucion and then waking back to San Ysidro, that's what I do when I go there.

San Diego Trolley: Less than 20 miles south of...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Less than 20 miles south of downtown San Diego lies the world's busiest port of entry - the international border crossing between San Ysidro, CA and Tijuana, Mexico. Here are several ways to get to the border:

By Bus: (800) 231-2222 Greyhound Bus Lines offer daily service from San Diego to Tijuana. Costs between $5 and $9.

By Car: Drive to the border, park at one of several pay parking lots on the U.S. side and walk across. Parking rates average $2 per half-hour or between $6 and $10 for 24 hours.

By Trolley: (619) 231-8549 The San Diego Trolley is an excellent alternative; regular service is provided from downtown San Diego. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes and the cost is $1.75.

Mexican Auto Insurance: If you plan to take your car into Mexico, you must purchase Mexican automobile insurance prior to crossing the border. Most U.S. policies are not valid in Mexico. In the unfortunate event of an accident, only a Mexican insurance policy will be recognized as valid.

Border Insurance Services: (800) 332-2118 Mexican Insurance by phone. Representing the largest and most reliable Insurance Company in Mexico.

Mex-Insur, Inc.: (619) 428-1121; 213 Sycamore Road, I-5 at the Via de San Ysidro exit San Ysidro, CA 92173
The best way to get around Tijuana is to walk. But if you are tired, you can always take a taxi and for approximately $6 (U.S.) you can get just about anywhere you want to go in the city.
