tijuana. by cachaseiro tijuana is one big tourist trap. the town is packed with all the most poor and desperate mexicans hoping to make it across the border and lot's of people who have just been send back by immigration. on top of that the place is full of drunk soldiers from camp pendelton who are down there to buy prostitues. perfect scene for any criminal. get out of there as quickly as possible. mexico is such a nice and freindly place that there is no reason to spend time in the worst place in the country. La Boufadora - 'The Blowhole' by tracynew72 Ahh yes - it's a tourist trap... but isn't that what traveling is all about? If you are in Baja, see La Boufadora (also known as 'The Blowhole') The actual bolwhole is at the far end of a swap meet style array of tourist gift shops. In Mexico - prices are negotiable, and there will be at least 5 other people selling the same wares up the road, so remember this when shopping for souvenirs. (but please be respectful - they need to make a living too!)
Just go! it's good fun for a few hours, and the blowhole is a great thing to see.
No alternative - sorry! Leave a Comment

Try to Have Fun by giampiero6 I would say that if you're looking for somekind of pleasant Mexican experience, Baja (at least the northern part ) is nothing but an unrewarding and unpleasant ersatz, fake, outdated gringo idea of what Mexico is. You basically have the choice of inauthentic mexicaness for gringo's or the grim and unpleasant reality of the thrid world in the shadow of Uncle Sam. You can try your Spanish out if you want, but the fact is the guy you're ablando your crappy spanish too probably spent 12 years as a carpentar's assistant or landscaper in Downey, CA.
If you must go, just to see Mexico remember, what you're seeing is some nether region, that is more east LA and chula vista, that it is Mexico City or Oaxaca. Go as far south as you can seek out the beachy, fishing villages. You can pretty much skip TJ, Rosarito, and Ensenada unless you're 19 and want to drink beer and have a 'girls gone wild" spring break kinda time.
The alternative is to save your pennies, and actually visit Mexico or spend some time visiting authentic Mexican parts of LA.

playing with toys in the La Boufadora Marketplace by tracynew72 happy shopping! This is a cruise tour bus stop - the people who sell are usually a little tougher than other open markets in the area for this reason. They have a regular flow of visitors and if you won't pay the asking price, the next "tourist" will! If you are looking for cheap touristy trinkets, you have found your place!
Dont carry large bills. It is pointless to haggle prices, and then ask for change. Your chances of getting something for a reasonably negotiated price are much higher when you have exact dollar amounts!
It helps to know a bit of spanish if you do explore the less touristy spots and make purchases - you may want to know the exchange for pesos as well. With that - you may recieve change for purchases in the form of pesos! Leave a Comment

Tijuana is gross. It's a bunch of touristy shops selling stuff made of plastic--distinctly not Mexican--and then a bunch of trash and graffiti. And the traffic is so bad that salesmen with baby carriages full of newspapers come out into the road and sell them to drivers so they can read while standing in the gridlock. Skip it.
