Structure 4: Rooms with a View

Structure 4: Rooms with a View, Becan

wilocrek Says:  This is one of more enjoyable buildings to explore as it has steep stairs to climb and many different rooms to explore. However its the rooms at the very top that set this building apart from the others. The rooms are clearly defined by its crumbling walls and there are...

Navigating through Becan

Navigating through Becan, Becan

wilocrek Says:  Visiting Becan is a rather simple process as there are paths that guide you in a full circle that will take you to all the structures within the site. The paths are clearly marked and wind through the jungle making the walk an experience in itself. One of the paths just...

The Moat: City Surrounded by Water

The Moat: City Surrounded by Water, Becan

wilocrek Says:  One of the most fascinating aspects of Becan is the moat that surrounded the city during its prime. Its one of the only Mayan sites to have such fortifications. The moat is still visible today, in fact you cross the moat on a bridge just before you enter the site. You will...

Structure 2: Rio Bec Architecture at its finest!

Structure 2: Rio Bec Architecture at its finest!, Becan

wilocrek Says:  The rich decorations of the facade show elements belonging to the Rio Bec architecture. The structure has several rooms facing the exterior and some interior ones. The second level is reached by a small stairway between two of the rooms.

Structure 1: An Oldie but a Goodie, Becan

Juego de Pelota: The Ball Court

Juego de Pelota: The Ball Court, Becan

wilocrek Says:  Much like the other Mayan ruins in the region there is a ball court here in Becan as well...I tell you these Mayans were ballers of the highest order. Of course they were hard core...what with the whole life and death aspect. This particular ball court was a ritual...

Structure 10: A Mayan Playground

Structure 10: A Mayan Playground, Becan

wilocrek Says:  From the front Structure doesn't look like much, it has a very familiar Mayan facade with steps climbing to an entrance. However this structure has much to it, for example it contains 12 rooms distributed over two levels. A temple was erected on the upper part whose facade...

Structure 8: True Beauty and Eloquence

Structure 8: True Beauty and Eloquence, Becan

wilocrek Says:  The two best words I can think of to describe Structure 8 is simply beauty and eloquence. I have visited the majority of the ruins in the Yucatan and have to say that the crumbling magesty of this once grand building still manages to inspire awe. With its two towers and the...

Structure 9 - Do Not Climb...or Do Climb?

Structure 9 - Do Not Climb...or Do Climb?, Becan

wilocrek Says:  Structure is the largest of the buildings in Becan in terms of height. It rises 32 meters above the ground and offers panoramic views of the ruins and of the jungle. There is a sign that asks visitors to not climb the structure though there is a rope running directly up the...

Hotel Debliz: Great Location....Decent Price

Hotel Debliz: Great Location....Decent Price, Becan

wilocrek Says:  Hotel Debliz is a excellent place to stay for your visit to Becan for a couple reasons, for one its reasonable priced at about $60 and the accommodations are very nice, but mostly its the fact that the Hotel Debliz is the only hotel in the area is what truly makes is a great...

Becan by Bus or Car

There are really only two ways to get to Becan, by bus or by car, unless of course your doing the Tour de Yucatan by bike. Taking the bus is the slowest option but a viable one as there is a bus stop in the town of Xpujil, from there you would need to take a taxi to Becan, which is about 6 kilometers from town. The best way would be to rent a car. If your coming from Cancun you simply take Route 307 south to Route 186 heading west. Becan is located just a few kilometers outside Xpujil, you will see the sign for the turnoff on the north side of the road. From the turn off its about 500 meters. From Cancun the drive will take you about 5 to 6 hours depending on how you drive. It took me about five hours averaging about 110 kilometers per hour and being fairly aggressive passing up all the trucks.
