Favorite thing: I went to CIUDAD Del Carmen to visit an orphanage. I was dumbfounded by all the "tips" on this site for this town. PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE! "PLAYA" DEL CARMEN AND "CIUDAD" DEL CARMEN ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT PLACES! Almost all the tips in here are for Playa Del Carmen and it's supposed to be a Ciudad Del Carmen page. It's about a 12 hour bus ride from Playa del Carmen. I KNOW, I did it. I live on Cozumel. Ciudad Del Carmen is in Campeche, a totally different state.
Know what you're talking about before you post, luckily I know they are different but you will misguide people with the information in your well-meaning posts.

    Poor people in poor houses

Local house in Playa del Carmen

Favorite thing: We Western or USA people or from Canada or.... well you know what i mean, are living in houses with all in it and when you see a house like on the picture you should get some respect for the people living in it (most whole families up to amounts of 20 !)
Always when i come back from a holiday and see my own house i understand again that i was lucky enough to be born in a ridge country! You should do that too.

    Playa del Carmen

    Favorite thing: http://www.mayanriviera.com/articles.cfm

Just see more info to make sure you will have a great holiday ! You will have a good time if you know where to go and what you should be doing.
Make sure to bring enough money cause Playa del Carmen is expensive and very very touristic.

    Fondest memory: http://www.golanguageadventures.com/practicalinfo/

Great site to tell you the GOOD things of Playa del Carmen. We did had a good time but we wouldnt go back there so quick cause we are more like not-touristic holiday lovers. We like to meet new friends but we also like to meet locals, and we didnt on this holiday.

Make sure there is a Mayan there

by Umfufu Written Oct 22, 2003
    Mayan Coock in El Jaguar

Favorite thing: If you want to have a real Mexican meal in a restaurant the best change of getting one is when the coock is Mexican / Mayan. At El Jaguar there is a Mayan coock.

Fondest memory: They just know how to keep it real Mexican without making it a tourist meal. (like when you order an Asian meal or Greek meal here in the Netherlands).

    Be happy and have fun

    Frans having a good time

Favorite thing: When you go to Mexico you should have fun, good weather, good hotel or room or what ever. But one of the things i like most is the food. I love to try all kind of foods / meals / drinks that are real LOCAL.
We did in a restaurant called Jaguar and as you can see i wasnt the only one who was having fun.

Fondest memory: Frans is a lucky person cause he only need to see the sun 1 hours a day and he is already having a tan....so he better stay inside till the last week so i have a little advantage on him ! He can use this "free" time for havind meals like we had in El Jaguar but then again.... he would gain to much weight !

    Wanna contact home?

by Umfufu Updated Oct 22, 2003
    Internet shop

Favorite thing: Dont do it in the hotel....we had to pay $ 3 for 10 minutes in the hotel for being on the internet, while in Playa del Carmen we had to pay $ 15 for an hours.
We went to this place which is close to the Jaguar restaurant (its just across the street).

Fondest memory: We had some calls home and no its not my fondest memory, but thats how i found out my lovely pussy-cat Umfufu wasnt on earth anymore.........but better in cat heaven then sick and poor on earth !

    Money change

Money exchange in Playa del Carmen

Favorite thing: If you like to change your money you better do it in a village cause at the hotel you get less money for your dollars. And you need a lot of money when you want to shop in Playa del Carmen.

Fondest memory: This change is near the ferry to Isla du Cozumel. Thats a good thing, cause there are a lot of people traveling with this ferry. But you can also keep your Dollars, cause they also take Dollars.

After Coba, driving an hour on...

by Patriquin Updated Jun 13, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: After Coba, driving an hour on teeny roads to get to a teenier village. We tramped 1/2 an hour through the jungle, coming to a 8 x 8 hole in the jungle floor. A rappel outfit was strapped on, then you lowered yourself through that floor (act of faith here), down an underground cave 30 metres to a 30 metre deep, cool, crystalline cenote, where you snorkeled with the little blind fishies. This was also the villagers water supply. Then you climbed up a ladder of vines and branches. Another 1/2 hour tramp to the top of a cliff over a lake where that jockstrap thingee was attached to a zipline and you flung yourself off! [Where did I sign that disclaimer/waiver?] Right across the lake to the arms of 2 waiting villagers. Went back to the village for a chicken/rice/tortilla feast with the village cockerel pecking your ankles for eating his wives. Do this!, absolutely fantastic.

Fondest memory: Maybe not the fondest, but the funniest recurring memory - it seemed that at every pyramid - Chitzen Itza, Coba, and at the cliffs at Tulum, there was this American woman who had climbed up but couldn't come down.... the same woman! The climb down in Coba was quite steep & ragged (go up & down at changing angles - much better, & take water), the climb at CI was quite high, but very smooth. But that poor woman freaked at the downward idea, then never learned the next time. Also, when tramping through the jungle to go cenote rapelling - the guide telling us not to touch trees because one might be the poisonous type and then he'd hafta go find the antidote type!

Favorite thing: When you walk on the 5th boulevard north you can see the beauty of some houses / shops. Its like the boulevard is placed into an old scenery...
