Palenque Warnings and Dangers

Now, I've been to some pretty hot places, like Merida, Antigua and Veracruz, Mexico (Even Kansas City is hot) so I thought "hey, this won't be any worse, right?" WRONG I have never been so hot in my entire life! With the tempurature and humidity, as well as the placement of the city closer to the Equator, it was dreadful! So, take plenty of water and wear cool clothes! I guess that maybe I like the cold better because at least you can bundle up, in the heat, you can go around buck naked and still sweat!! AHHHH!!

Zapatistas are NOT friendly to anyone. Not even if you are a tourist or a local. If you decide to travel during dark hours (18:00 - 6:00) be sure not to take large amounts of money with you. With a hundred pesos in your pocket will be enough. Zapatistas usually stop buses (first, second, what ever class) on the road. They will search all passengers for money. If by any chance you run through this danger DO NOT try to talk to them. Give them what you have and say ''NO TENGO MAS''.

A lot of tourists think that Zapatistas are fighting for a good cause and maybe that they are sons of the ''Holy Spirit and Virgin Mary''. Zapatistas are a bunch of lazy guys that try to make a living from others.

Again, for your own safety DO NOT TRY TO SPEAK TO THEM . Trust me, they don't give a sh*t on who you are or where you come from.

Palenque is a bit of a rough town. El Centro during the day is safe, but we were advised to take a taxi back to our hotel and not to stay out past 10 o'clock, even in a large group. The ruins of Palenque are safe as well.
