San Miguel de Allende is the seat of the municipality of Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, a historic town founded in 1542 that has become an attractive tourist destination for wealthy Mexico City residents and has a large American and Canadian expatriate community composed primarily of retirees.

San Miguel de Allende is located in the eastern part of Guanajuato in Mexico's mountainous bajío region. The bajío (low place) is a relatively flat region about 2,000 m (7,000 ft) above sea level surrounded by mountains; it is a part of the Mexican altiplano. San Miguel serves as the administrative seat for the surrounding municipality of Allende, Guanajuato.

The municipality rests at 1,870 m (6,140 ft) above sea level. The municipality extends over an area of 1,537.19 km2 (593.51 sq mi). To the north it is bordered by the municipalities of San Luis de la Paz and Dolores Hidalgo. To the west it is also bordered by Dolores Hidalgo. To the south the municipality is bordered by Juventino Rosas, and Comonfort and to the southeast by Apaseo el Grande. To the northeast it is bordered by San José Iturbide. Finally, to the east it is bordered by Querétaro municipality in the state of Querétaro. The municipal seat is located 274 km (170 mi) from Mexico City and 97 km (60 mi) from the state capital at Guanajuato, Gto.

    Nice-to-see: Universidad de Guanajuato

The Universidad de Guanajuato (Guanajuato University) was founded by the Jesuits in the early XVIII century with the original name of College of the Holy Trinity. It became property of the Government in 1828 turning its name into State College and finally got the university status in 1945 becoming the University of Guanajuato.

The only item of interest to tourists is massive green stone neoclassic building with the imposing façade and the large stairway, worth a glance and a photograph. It is right in the heart of the city center, next to church Compañia de Jesus.

Must-see: El Museo de las Momias

  • A Mummy Found in the Museum - Guanajuato
    A Mummy Found in the
    Museum
    by gdilieto
The Mummy Museum (El Museo de las Momias) is already thoroughly reviewed in this forum and I won't add much other description. It well deserves its reputation of one of Guanajuato's top attractions as well as of one of the best museums in Central Mexico.

Composition of the soil and the air in Guanajuato is such that, when over the years buried bodies were routinely removed from the municipal cemetery, many of those bodies were found mummified. Those natural-preserved bodies have been put on the display in the museum. There are more than 100 mummified bodies in display, in different status of preservation, some with hair and clothing intact. The oldest mummy is as old as 1870. Among others, it is on display the mummy of a phoetus, buried with his/her mother, said to be the smallest mummy in the world.

Some mummies are quite impressive so if you are impressionable or too sensitive you may want to pass. If you are not, it is definitely a must-see attraction. The museum is a couple of Kms outside the city center and you will need a taxi or other transportation to get there.

    Meet El Pipila!

  • El Pipila! - Guanajuato
    El Pipila!
    by Jetgirly,

Apparently "pipila" means "female turkey" in Spanish. Lucky for you, "El Pipila" is not a turkey at all! Rather, he is a hero of the Mexican War of Independence who strapped a huge slab of rock to his back and crawled through a combat zone to light a granary (housing Spanish soldiers and civilians) on fire. Once the building was ablaze, his comrades were able to enter and slaughter all the Spanish soldiers and civilians inside. Go, Pipila!

Today, El Pipila has been immortalized in stone on a hill high above Guanajuato. On his shoulder sits a blue, glass lookout box that my guidebook says is open daily until eight pm, but was closed at six o' clock on the dot the day I visited. The views are actually much better from the mirador (viewpoint) around the statue anyways, so don't worry if you don't get your chance to climb through his internal organs to the shoulder lookout!

Access to El Pipila is by foot (about thirty minutes uphill), city bus (marked "PIPILA") or funicular (see my other tips).

Located a few steps away from the Teatro Juarez and facing the Union Garden, you find this marvellous construction built on 1784. The Barroque style front is beautifully ornated with varied forms sculptured on pink stone where you can observe on the sides the images of St. Francisco and St. Domingo. Centrally, and above the door, you find the window of the chorus which has - placed before it - St. Diego sculpture.

    Los Momias de Guanajuato:
In the museum of the mummies, 119 mummies of men, women, and children are shown, among whom there is the smallest mummy in the world. It is said that a pregnant woman wiht 5 or 6 months who dies with her son during Caesarean, were buried together and they were exhibited that way, but in 1972 are separated and now the small body is known ast the smallest mummy of the world.

    Nice-to-see: Guanajuato's Underground Streets

    Entrance to an Underground
    Street

One of Guanajuato's unique attractions is the underground streets (Calles Subterraneas), which cross the city along the dry riverbed of River Guanajuato. Built in the early 1960s, they have likely saved the city center from mass transit preserving the historical downtown. From here, one level below the street level, one can admire some of the city's charming archways and balconies, which looms over every opening in the tunnel. An easy access is from Plazuela de los Ángeles, next to the Callejón del Beso; look for the stairway taking one level down.

Chill Out in Plaza La Paz

  • The Basilica in Plaza La Paz - Guanajuato
    The Basilica in Plaza La

Plaza La Paz feels like the heart of Guanajauto, with main streets pumping vehicles out from it's busy center like blood, and people congregating like cholesterol deposits at tables around the it's central square. No, I'm totally joking. There's nothing anatomical about this little plaza at all! However, it is true that it's a very central point from which carriage tours depart, city busses leave and official tourist information is given. The little cafes around the plaza are okay (see my tip about El Canastillo de Flores), but it's the Basilica that is the plaza's star attraction. Dating back to 1696, this beautiful Baroque building plays home to an image of the Virgin of Guanajuato that was donated by King Charles the First and his son, Phillip the Second, of Spain. If you happen to be in Guanajuato during Semana Santa, this is one of the most popular places to watch the Easter procession.

    Supposedly a Fetus
    by Jetgirly, 1 more photos
When you buy your tickets to the Mummy Museum, you'll have the option of paying more or less another dollar to check out the "Room of the Cult of the Dead". Much like the "Chamber of Horrors" at your average wax museum, this is a bizarre collection of everything relating to death. Exhibits run the gamut from an animatronic Grim Reaper to what is supposedly an aborted fetus (see my lovely photo) to holographs that will give your kids nightmares for years to come. It's tacky, but it's only a dollar and you can be in and out in ten minutes... if you've already paid for the Mummy Museum you may as well check it out too.
