My girlfriend and I ate at the La Terraza restaurant in August of 2007. The place clearly owes its abundant clientele to its location, right next to the astonishing church of Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel (on Sollana street), the main religious temple in town. The menu looked overpriced but since the place was full, we were hungry and the list of dishes seemed interesting we sat down and ordered. We were clearly disappointed from the moment the waiter, who was nice, brought us the plates. My girlfriend ordered a hamburger and I ordered, following the waiter’s recommendation, one of the main items in the menu, a steak. First came the Sopa Azteca, which was a poor tomato soup. With it came the order of Guacamole, which had five nachos separating a pretty scarce amount of the green, healthy sauce. That showed us that the place was either a chic one or a cheap one. Then came the main courses. First, about the hamburger. After one bite, we returned the hamburger which was worst than McDonald’s: the patty was clearly a frozen patty and it tasted horribly. Honestly, the worst meat they served us in Mexico. Furthermore, and what really offended us is that the peace of meat was a blatant lack of decency of the owner for a burger that is over 50 pesos! (about 5 USD). As far as my steak, you could truly see through it! It had the shape of a skirt steak, yes, but it seemed to have been smashed several times with a cooking hammer to enlarge it and extend its scarce area on the plate, which had literally one slice of tomato and the volume of rice that fits in a shot glass. The restaurant owner, a blonde lady in her late fifties or early sixties, was giving us such a bad vibe that we just couldn’t wait to leave. She told us that nobody had returned a hamburger before and that this one was fine. She did offer my girlfriend another dish but seeing that disrespect for us and that overpricing was THE POLICY of that place we did not take the offer, hoping that they wouldn’t charge us for the hamburger at the end.
(CONTINUATION FROM ABOVE) Well, guess what? She did charge us for it. Not wanting to engage in a stupid, non-sense conversation which I knew before hand would have not changed anything (if anything it may have given pleasure to the ´Devil Wears Prada´ of the restaurants), we paid and we left, feeling sorry for the personnel who works there (can you imagine what she pays her employees?) and feeling disgusted by how the owner was kissing the ass of the couple in the table next to us, two elderly Americans, probably loaded. Good thing is that we took the hamburger to go (with its no more than 10 French fries!) and gave it to an old lady who has asking for money at the door of the church and who thanked us sincerely! Also, as we were leaving, we had the pleasure of saying a powerful line to a group of five French guys who were about to get into the restaurant: ´we wouldn’t suggest for you to eat here.´ They thanked us and in less than a second, before stepping in, turned around and went somewhere else. Our bill: 330 pesos. What these guys would have probably spent at the restaurant: over 1.000. The good karma/bad karma theory, right here. We feel the owner’s only interest is ripping off clients she will never see again. That’s why we recommend you to invest your precious pesos somewhere else. March 2007 visit. We make it a point to come here on every visit, and we are never disappointed. Dine in the central courtyard, with live music, or in a quiet side room. Either way the service is very good and the food great - lots of Mexican traditional sauces such as a black mole or a coloradito on pork, a mole poblano and chicken, plus plenty of seafood and steak choices. Without drinks and wine not so expensive.

March 2007 visit. Attentive service in a quiet courtyard setting; we chose two different fish entrees each with a wide variety of preps. Both were outstanding as were the Mexican apps. This is a nice option for lunch & dinner. The menu features many different Mexican dishes, the food is quite good as well as the service and environment -- very Mexican in its decoration and coziness. They even play live music in the evening. Portions are generous and prices aren't too high. There's a bar on the second floor of this same building which is run by the same owners. I did not go there but they told me it's a nice place where you can have a lot of fun, they play modern music and it's popular among young - middle aged people.
Ask for different entries, they have a wide variety and they are tasty. The sopes (sort of small tortilla with chicken or meat or just cream & cheese on top + chili sauce) is what comes to my mind first, they were pretty big and fulfilling. Leave a Comment

Be sure to sit on the roof top patio and watch the sunset. The food was all great and each entree was enough for 2 people.
The eggplant parmasean was just great. It was so good that I ordered it both times we went. Leave a Comment

Great breakfast and churros. Also a great place to run into people you have met around town. It is crowded for breakfast so get there early or plan to wait in line. Great place to stop during the day for a quick pick up and place to regroup for the rest of the day of sightseeing and shopping. Service can sometimes be a little slow but then again you are in Mexico.
The Churros because they are hot and fresh. Leave a Comment

This friendly restaurant is just a block from the Jardin. The food is Mexican, the clientele a good mix of locals and tourists, foreign and Mexican. The tacos are good and the burritos are huge. Best deal of the day is the "comida corrida" daily special. It features soup of salad, a main dish with rice and beans, dessert and fresh fruit water or coffee for less than $8.00. The guacamole is excellent, authentic Mexican style and made to order. The avocado/tomatillo salsa is fantastic. You can have a beer, or there's a full bar, too. And Juan, the owner, just opened a lovely new sidewalk terrace on the small stepped plaza across the street, complete with umbrella tables and orange trees in tubs--a great place for a cold drink or a cappuccino. You'll often see people sitting here for hours playing table games. There's often a table full of regulars that make up the Ten Ten Pie "family," especially in the evenings. One night a week, there's an ongoing game of dominoes. One of the players will be Juan Villasenor, the owner. Do take the opportunity to chat with Juan. His English is good, his personality impish, his grin infectious. This may well become your regular hang-out in San Miguel, as it has mine.
Tacos al pastor--I love it with the avocado/tomatillo salsa on the table. Me, my sweetie and his family at the restaurant by Laura_Mexico This is a very popular, must-visit little restaurant owned by a French woman which is located very close to the main square / cathedral, on a small side street. It's CROWDED on weekends - especially on Sunday -, so you'd probably want to make a reservation or otherwise you will probably have to wait 30 mins. or so to get a table. The environment is very nice and cozy, with a fountain in the middle of the patio, the personnel is very nice and the service was good (even if the place was crowded, they weren't as slow as one would have expected), as well as the quality of the food. There are many american tourists that like to come here often, as you can find a good variety of mexican dishes, simple but tasty -- and the portions are generous. The prices are pretty decent too.
The mixed juices are freshly made and delicious, I had an orange-strawberry and it was GREAT. They also make some nice shakes (chocolate and banana would be my favorite). Pancakes are nice, and I heard that tamales and chilaquiles were also great (although maybe a bit too spicy for tourists)! Everything is nice in general, as it is home made and very fresh.
