*If you're flying to and out of Acapulco, security is still no laughing matter.

*D-Rich, pictured here was your typical first time visitor to Acapulco.
He was the typical loud mouth American visitor.. a Gringo

*Although things didn't seem as intense as the Airport security back in the States, having a shirt on and not joking around is probably the best practice

*Also, not reaking of alcohol will also prevent in most cases a search of your backpack/luggage....it seems that D-Rich wasn't smelling too rosy this day :)

*Remember there are limits to the number of bottles of alcohol and tobacco you can carry back with you

Buses: How to get to Acapulco
  • Tip Rating:
  • By bus: many bus lines. Great service. About 40 dollars to/from Mexico City (about 4-5 hours). Also direct service from other cities.

By car: There are 2 highways from Mexico City: free and toll. Free is an 8 hours trip, lots of trucks. Toll is faster (just 4 hours) but expensive, about 35 dollars (4 toll booths). Choose your highway!

By plane: Major airlines fly there.

  • You can go to Acapulco by bus, airplane or car. The latter option is the cheapest for more than one person, although the toll roads are expensive (over US$60 one way if I remember right). Their condition is superb and you can leave Mexico City at 07:00PM on a Friday night and be in time in Acapulco to go clubbing most of the night. The bus is convenient if you are travelling alone, but check your return time - some bus stations in Mexico City are not too safe in the middle of the night!

Taxis: Getting around Acapulco is get...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting around Acapulco is great fun. The so-called Disco buses run from Walmart along the Costera right into the old town and cost 3.5 pesos per person. The 'Beetle' taxis, of which there seem to be millions, will take you anywhere. Make sure you negiotate the rate with the driver before you get in. It should cost you no more than 20 pesos to go along the bay and 30 pesos to go to see the divers at La Quebrada. There are larger American type taxis, probably equipped with air-conditioning, which I understand are two or three times more expensive than the Beetles, but I did not use them.

  • The big yellow BUS While there are lots of busses on the Costera, the beachfront drive, the Yellow Bus says 'Acapulco' on the side, is very cheap (the driver will make change), and is air conditioned. It will take you all along from Old Acapulco (Caleta Beach) to past the Wal-Mart on the Bay! A GREAT Way to get back and forth --don't bother with taxis! The bus comes every 5-10 minutes!

  • while you can go by air you may also arrive from Mexico City in about 5 hours by a comfortable bus with free refreshments. (not the greatest bathroom for ladies). I recommend Estrella de Oro

Buses: The best way to travel to...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to travel to Acapulco is by plane, however, you must avoid flying with Continental Airlines!!!
You can walk to many of the restaurants, bars and shops in Acapulco. It is considered safe to walk the main street (Cortera Miguel Aleman) until about 11:00 pm (so as they say, but we walked through early morning). It is also safe on the beach until sunset (well, I walked midnight on the beach!). Taxi service is available 24 hours a day. The cost is reasonable and are probably the most convenient means of tranportation night or day. It is recommended that you verify the fee with the driver before entering the cab, not at the end of the ride, when it is a little more difficult to negotiate. It also helps to have the exact amount (ask hotel front desk the estimate of the cab fee). And traveling by city bus in Acapulco is less comfortable than a taxi, but it is inexpensive and can be entertaining, educational and fun!

  • Tip Rating:
  • In Acapulco, there are towns worth to visit such as Taxco and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. By bus, from Acapulco to Taxco is about 3 hours and to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is about 4 hours. Buy your bus ticket in advance from a travel agency that has Estrella de Oro Boletos sign. Because travel agencies are not selling round trip ticket, it is suggested to buy your return ticket when you have arrived to your destination. It is also a must to know the last trip back to Acapulco. Unless you intend to stay overnight. DO NOT purchase tickets (or tours) on the streets. These people are likely pretending to be associated with a travel agency.
