    Fishing for sail fish

    by midnight_mike Written Apr 16, 2007

Other than marlin, its larger cousin, sail fish are the toughest species of fish to catch. It can take as little as 30 minutes or as long as two hours to catch a sail fish. Trying to catch one is extremely tiring; if you cannot do 20 push-ups, you probably should do something else with your vacation time.

If you want to fishing for sail fish, you will have to make arrangements at least one day in advance. Show up at the docks around 2 p.m. and interview the boat owners. One person may own a fleet of boats, so ask plenty of questions. How old is the boat? Does it have a radio? Who is the captain? How much experience does he have? Does he speak English? Are there life rafts? Are you catching any fish? How much is the price for one day? What does it include? Ideally, you will want to see the boat come in so you will know if they have caught any fish.

The boats leave early in the morning and return early in the afternoon. They usually drive out about an hour and will troll until a sail fish is hooked. The first mate will set the hook and guide you through the process. The captains are reluctant to release fish, so if you catch it the fish will be killed. Since they do not release them, the sail fish population has been severely depleted. Sometimes one boat might catch two or three sail fish, other times you will get nothing. If you have two or three other people with you, it is possible (depending on where you are in line) that you might not even have a chance to catch a fish.

You will likely pay between $150 and $200 for the boat for the entire day.

    Rent a mini boat

    Cargo ship in Acapulco bay

Rent a mini boat to cruise the bay! You can get closely enough to all kind of ships to say hello to people on cruises, warships, merchants, vessels and fishing boats.

The bay is very wide and it may take you about one hour to get to the middle. Rent of these mini motorboats is affordable, not expensive.

    Fishing Sunrise

Got to go fishing with my Dad which was alot of fun. We had a good captain but unfortunately, only a few hits. We went out about 30 miles and the seas got pretty rough. The only thing pulled in from the side of the boat that day was me. :(
You can charter a private 1/2 day boat with Fish "R" Us for about $300 (US). Affordable if you split the cost with other people. They provide transportation, lunch and all fishing gear.

    Acapulco aquatic adventure

Rent a tiny boat and come close to the big ships anchored at Acapulco Bay. Those are my brothers trying to get to the aircraft carrier.

    Boating and fishing outside...

Boating and fishing outside the city is an enjoyable way to spend the day out of town and away from crowds. It is also cooler and the fresh smell of flowers and coconut trees is refreshing.
