Getting around Acapulco is great fun. The so-called Disco buses run from Walmart along the Costera right into the old town and cost 3.5 pesos per person. The 'Beetle' taxis, of which there seem to be millions, will take you anywhere. Make sure you negiotate the rate with the driver before you get in. It should cost you no more than 20 pesos to go along the bay and 30 pesos to go to see the divers at La Quebrada. There are larger American type taxis, probably equipped with air-conditioning, which I understand are two or three times more expensive than the Beetles, but I did not use them.
My husband and I just returned from our 2nd visit to Acapulco. Our previous visit, 2 years ago, was right before all of the "trouble" began in the area. After much worrying and contemplation, we booked flights to go again in January 2011, staying in the Grand Mayan for the second time. In short, this has been our best vacation to date. We had such a wonderful, worry-free, and beautiful trip that was packed with rest and loads of fun. With all of the problems in the area that's been on the news and online, we were extremely hesitant to leave the hotel and trust a driver. In our stay 2 years ago, we'd wave down cabs with no problem and venture anywhere. Prior to leaving for Acapulco, we booked car service with Baldo Gomez, and we will forever use his services anytime we go back! Baldo is such a warm, caring, and informative man! We expressed our worries about leaving the resort, even to go shopping at Wal-Mart for provisions. He relieved any stresses we had. He even had one of his drivers, Raphael, come into the store with us to help us shop! On another car ride with Baldo on our first day, he told us that if we requested to go to a place that was in a "bad area" he would let us know. He also told us to feel free to call him to ask about any excursions we planned on doing if we had any concerns (highly recommend taking a boat to see the cliff divers!). He is such a wonderful family man and we honestly felt like we were waving good-bye to a family member as we walked into the airport to return home! Email to book him prior to departing at firstname.lastname@example.org. He is fully insured and has proof of all, unlike what most of the drivers will tell you. His prices are the same as taxis - even better if you use him more than once! Overall, this trip was once again an A+++... We can't wait to go back next year!
Taxis are plentiful, cheap and safe. Make sure you ask the price to your location before getting in and ensure you are talking Pesos. We enjoyed every taxi driver and they were full of great information.
Even though I was familiar with an idea of having multiple bus stations spread around Mexican cities, I was not familiar with an idea of "Estrella Blanca" bus company having multiple stations around Acapulco. So naturally cab driver took me the one I did not need....
We recently spent a week in Acapulco. We had read reviews for Baldo Gomez, so decided to contact him. He was wonderful! He contacted us ahead of time to let us know what he could offer us, his charges, etc. he was friendly, prompt, hospitable. We felt completely safe with him, and learned much about the history and culture of the area. Yea! Thank you , Baldo, for your part in our great vacation!
Of course the Taxi here it's inexpensive and fun in the beetle, but remeber that it's without aircondo!
