Guadalajara has many beggars and street merchants. Many times they will stop you on the street or approach the car and ask for money. Many of them are selling trinkets or gum or something small. Mostly they just want to sell you something or get a little money. Mostly harmless. But just keep your eyes open and keep your valuables where they are safe. Camera bags should be zipped up and in front of you. Back packs, closed and in your hands. Don't set anything down and walk away. If you have a lot of cash, you should lock it in the Hotel safe or get a money belt or pouch that you can conceal under your clothes.
I dont want to paint a bad picture, but this is a big city and it only takes one bad person to ruin your vacation. I have been here many times and have had no problems.

Unique Suggestions: Some of my fellow travelers told me that they dress casual and dont wear any new or designer clothes. Dress down, jeans and sneakers. Most times you are going to look like an obvious tourist so be aware of that and dont wander off alone. Guadalajara is a great town and we have had many great experiences here. It is safe in most areas, just trust your instincts.
We live here now and shop downrown often, enjoy.

Parque Morelos near San Juan de Dios

Well, to use the word trap is probably not the correct word. San Juan de Dios is filled with tons of great things to buy - but just beware with the prices. We went to Tonala tianguis (flea market) on Sun. and found some things half the price that they were asking for in SJ.

Unique Suggestions: Be sure to look around FIRST - get an idea of prices before you buy anything. Watch out for all the contraband that they sell on the top floor - pirated software, movies, clothes.

Check out the second floor where they have a whole section on magic potions to make your lover love you more, keep bad neighbors away powder, dried hummingbirds to stick in your bra for good luck (!!?)

Fun Alternatives: Go to the Tianguis in Tonala on Thurs and Sunday.

TAXIS --- TAXIS --- TAXIS
Like a lot of tourist cities, this is the best way to lose your money of feel robber. The problem is that is there not other way to go arround the city...At least try to check if the have 'taximetros' to avoid an expensive trip. Or ask to the taxi driver how much will cost and then try to find something better.
