This is the best way to get from one end of Puerto Vallarta to the other. There are two types of buses, ones that go to El Centro, and ones that go via Tunel. El Centro takes you downtown, Tunel takes you through the tunnel to the other side of the city. For 4 pesos, you can take a tour around the city, because no matter what, they always end up back at their starting point. One thing, though, they do not wait for you to sit down before moving, and they don't drive smoothly, so if you are looking for a scenic and stress free ride, you may want to take the footmobile.

If you want to get to a lot of the small secluded beaches on the south side of Banderas Bay you can use a water taxi. There are no roads to places like Yelapa.

Just go to Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta and water taxi is one of the more affordable options for getting to these areas.

The cheapest way to get around is by bus. I have to admit I wouldn't have taken the bus if we didn't have a guide that told us when to jump on and when to jump off.

But if you have time to research it, know spanish, have the patients, this is by far the cheapest, you are just talking a few pesos and you get to meet lots of locals!!

I remember the bus driver being crazy and the the roads although paved, you can expect to be bumped around a lot on these old buses.

Consider it an amusement park ride maybe?

If you are planning a cruise but this Puerto Vallarta is a place you want to visit, I can tell you it is a very popular cruise ship destination, so that won't be a problem either.

I am sure there are hundreds of different operators going into this port. I just provided the web address for one of them.

I have to say if I were going on a cruise this would be a great place to stop in and visit for the shopping, downtown, the Malecon and the excersion opportunities!

It's something to consider for sure when your planning a cruise. Where will we be stopping? :-(

I got to Puerto Vallarta on Air Transat, it was an all inclusive package from $1200 CDN by airfare, meals and accommodations were all included from Edmonton, Alberta.

It was a great deal I though, including transfers to and from the airport.

This tip may only be relevant if you are leaving from Canada. I know there are many other major carriers going into airport.

If you can wait until last minute I know there were some people that stayed an extra 7 days and paid only half what I did!!!!

  • Depending where you live, a plane for me would be the best way to get to PVR.....for most people it would be.
As for getting around PV, I would say the city bus or Cabs. the Bus is very inexpensive. For Cabs, make sure before you get in the cab to ask how much it will be. ( ex: to go from the Marina to Downtown, it costs 40-45 pesos. ) dont pay any more than that ....or they are ripping you off.

  • After you pass immigration and customs hang a left and walk out FRONT of airport (not side where overpriced taxis are) where coach busses are parked and veer slightly to left and hop on city bus for about 4 pesos...any bus will do...if it is labeled "tunel" it will bypass much of downtown and end up south of river right near hotel Posada de Roger...if it is labeled "centro" it will go directly there...either way you are good to go...all busses lead to the same place...they just take different routes...if first time and no map in hand just ask conductor to let you off at hotel Posada de Roger...or whatever hotel you might be staying at...don't be weak and take an over-priced airport taxi.

Bus/Transit: Another option in PV is the bus

  • Reliable buses & mini-VW vans travel between the Marina & Mismaloya Beach. The fare is about $5 pesos or less that $1.00 USD & each bus has a destination written on it's windshield (i.e., El Centro means the bus goes downtown, anything else and you might end up in Acapulco...lol). Sometimes you'll be able to just flag these buses down as you are walking. Most of these buses stop running at midnight so a taxi will be necessary after that time. This is the most inexpensive way to get around town. There is also a free trolley bus which travels along the malecón (beachwalk).

    Taxis: Take the taxi

  • Unless you plan to travel great distances or visit remote beaches, taxis and buses are by far the best way to get around. Taxis are plentiful, clean and reliable, and fares are reasonable and fixed (always ask what your fare will be before you get in). Taxis are usually lined up in front of most hotels (as well as downtown and at the airport) and if they aren't, your concierge will summon one for you (the cost range from $30 pesos/$2.50 USD to $90 pesos/$9.00 USD). You can also rent a taxi for a couple hours at around 150 pesos per hour. This is a great way to see the area.

Rental cars, motorcycles and scooters are available from major rental car agencies (they have locations at the airport, hotels and downtown). Another form of transportation are the pangas (small boats) along the beaches & near the Marina. Boat trips can be arranged to some of the exotic locales in and around Banderas Bay. And last but certainly least, riding horses are a nice diversion in Mexico.
