San Miguel is an easy town to walk in provided you don't mind hills and cobble stone streets and narrow sidewalks. It is safe to walk around nearly the entire town at night. Many people (gringos) like to grab a local taxi which are readily available in most areas of the town. the cost of the ride in town to almost anywhere is around $2 US, while a bus cost around 40 cents to get from point a to b. the problem with the buses is they tend to be slow, sometimes crowded and it may be hard to know what route they are taking. Being able to speak some Spanish is helpful for both the buses and the taxis. Unless it is a long trip I usually like to take my time and walk this very beautiful town and to look into the wonderful array of interesting little shops. You should never be in a hurry in SMA, remember this is Mexico and everything is done at a much slower pace than in the US.
