Mariposas!

by Rebecki

We did a butterfly tour with this group to the area where the monarchs winter. The tour guide was professional, knowledgeable, fun and very attentive to everyone's needs. He knew the best places to stop for pictures, lunch and other breaks - and got us there! Start planning now for next season - roughly November 1- March 15 (we were there 3/20 and saw thousands of butterflies - truly a breathtaking experience!)

Yep - those are all butterflies!
Drive thru small towns

You get to see a lot of things from festivals to taking a ride in a boat on Lake Chapala, in town of Chapala. Go to Uruapan to the Parque Nacional Eduardo Ruiz. Much vegitation to see, the water is good & you might see men diving into the water , lovely walking areas. There's a spot nautrally formed from the water in the rocks called Rodilla del Diablo..Devil's Knee. It's very serene here. Then there are vendors outside of the park selling their trinkets & hand made dresses, etc. Ask where to find tamales de agua dulce & corundas. The tamales are really good. The corundas are similar to tamales but wrapped in the green leaf of the corn stalk..not the husk. They're served with homemade heavy sour cream. Very good. Also you must try the Mexican hot chocolate. It's the best. They use a special wooden mixer to get it frothy.

The Day of the Dead and more

by melosh

I once saw a list of the top 100 travel things to do or see in your life. A night on Janitzio for the night of the dead was one of them. I visited the island during the day but spent my night and early morning elsewhere, and I do not regret it. The two important things to realize are that the tradition really involves three days and there is a lot of variations of how these days are celebrated in different towns. You do not have to stay in Patzcuaro (Hotel reservations must be made months in advance.) or even go to the State of Micheocan. I have heard that there are especially beautiful celebrations in Oaxaca and Tlaxcala. I found these celebrations full of authentic emotion. They seemed to have nothing to do with Halloween or Memorial Day as celebrated in the US. Because three days are involved many Mexicans take this as an opportunity for a long "puente" and visit family or take...

Janitizio

This is a small island in lake Patzcuaro famous for the night-long vigil during the Day of the Dead, but there are other reasons to visit. There is a gigantic statue surrounded by a small park on the top of the island, there are some nice streets with shops and restaurants and various vistas. The presence of the shops is an indication that this is a year around tourist destination. I suspect that it is empty during the week and becomes active on weekends with the vast majority of the visitors being Mexican. Although I usually try to avoid the "tourist crowds", I would recommend going to this island on the weekend to allow the greatest Mexican people watching and interacting experience.
