This really is THE place to go (at least once) while in Cuernavaca. It's incredibly romantic night or day, but try to get there before dusk so you can see the birds before they go off to sleep in the trees. The hotel that is connected to the restaurant has an equally beautiful garden and pool right next door and through the gate. If you ask them they will let you through.
oh , this is just such a glorious pleasure. YOu can pass this place by so easily. It's glorious. The gardens roll down to a swimming pool and ornate statues entertain you in the garden fountains. You fall into the huge straw chairs. It is heaven
Favorite Dish: Mole with anything
And the desserts.... the decoartion of the plate is almost to much to spoil
Oh, and the banana fritters....
And even breakfast is great.....
You can find all kinds of info. on this place on the web because it is so world-famous (apparently in the top 25), but we had such a great time there I really have to tell a bit about it. The restaurant is connected to a nice hotel right in the middle of town and they share two large gardens which are absolutely gorgeous and filled with flamingos, peacocks, and secretary birds. If you get there before dusk the peacocks will come right up to your table and eat out of your hand. The experience of this place is just as amazing as the food. You walk into the small lobby/bar and the maitre 'd tells you to 'pasa le, por favor', which basically means, c'mon in/ make yourself at home. There is a large patio on the left with comfortable couches and chairs where you sit and order a leisurly coctail and take in the view of the incredible garden and watch the birds jump from tree to deck and back again. At dusk they start lighting candles all around and it gets very romantic. After an hour or so they come back to your spot and ask if you're ready to order. If not, they smile and come back later. They take your order from their giant wood menu-billboards and sit back and relax (some more). Then a few minutes before your order is ready they politely tell you your table is ready. The dining tables are on the other side of the courtyard and are just as nice and romantic. Then they bring your food which was equally impressive.
Favorite Dish: I had a fillet mignon which was mouth-watering, super tender and large (bonus!). My wife had a red snapper in a tequila sauce which was expensive but according to her, worth every centavo. We went back again the next week just to hang out on the patio for drinks, which is perfectly acceptable, and to introduce this swank place to several friends from the school, who were all equally impressed. Just a couple words of warning: don't expect to get out of there (and enjoy yourself) in less than three hours- it can be done but why bother? Also, the bathrooms are off the lobby and have only two toilets, which can be a drag when the place is full- just plan accordingly. The price is also a tad high- we spend about $75 total w/out wine, but considering it is in the top 25 in the whole world, it is certainly worth it. Buen Provecho!!
Quinta Las Mananitas, Cuernavaca
This is a real blow-out treat and one of the few saving graces of the city of Cuernavaca.
AS you enter the doors of the restaurant, you know you are in for something special. Small, wood-panelled bar leads you past regency furnished waiting area and out to the manicured gardens - tinkling fountains, luxuriant lawns, peacocks, discretely lit palms. A large, comfortable bar is to the left, semi-covered, candles on every table, incredibly attentive service (a waiter for every task - from taking your order for drinks - they do great margaritas - through to their delivery, emptying ashtrays, bringing over nibbles, showing you the menu - on a blackboard - to taking your order. You can sit in the bar until your first course is ready and you will be shown to your table from there. (If you are there in the evening look out for the peacocks roosting above your head in the trees).
The food and everything attached to the art of dining is wonderous. It is deservedy regarded as one of the best restaurants in Mexico.
Not surprisingly, you pay through the nose for the experience - but considering that it IS one of the best restaurants, the bill at approx 80 pounds sterling for 2 courses, bottle of Italian wine (wine in Mexico is not cheap) a couple of Margaritas each and coffee was not extortionate. And it is worth it for the whole experience - for the first time in Cuernavaca city we had a sense of space (helped by the fact that it we the night of a full moon).
The restaurant is part of a VERY upmarket hotel and we decided to have a nose round after the meal. Very helpful member of staff came across us looking through the (locked) gate into the hotel swimming pool and took us through. The piece-de-resistance was the small garden pool at the bottom of the gardens with the pet pink flamingoes!! If you haven't had the opportunity in Yucatan (or Lake Victoria in Africa), then you can geet very very close to these strange but beautiful creatures.
Overall a complete delight.
Favorite Dish: Predominantly Italian and American steaks with a few Mexican dishes.
My favorite place for a cold beer and snack! The wild crowd comes late for the upstairs disco
Favorite Dish: Caso Fundido!
