Estado de Morelos Things to Do

  • Gardens and really old remains

These unique and ancient trees thrive on growing their roots vertically on the ruined walls all over the Hacienda Cortes. They're very other-wordly and like nothing i've ever seen before.

  • Cool Factory space turned into a...

This was the main sugar processing room at the Cortes plantation & Hacienda. It's a huge vaulted space and half of it is a really nice restaurant. Very cool dining experience, especially at night.

  • Hacienda Cortes (no Z)

We didn't stay here, but walking around was really nice. The rooms didn't look incredibly swank from what we could see, and the prices were definitely not comensurate w/ the quality.

  • More Hacienda Cortes

They actually call it the, "ex Hacienda Cortes". I guess because he's been dead and gone for like a really, really long time now.

  • Cortez: I'm sure he was a murderous...

but his sprawling hacienda is a really cool place to visit now that he's been dead for like 500 years. There are gorgeous flowers and trees and fountains all over the place. The pool was built around some original columns that the historical preservation authorities wouldn't let them remove.

  • Hacienda Cortez

This place is now a fairly nice hotel, but it used to be a sugar plantation and part time home of Hernan Cortez and his sons during the 16th century. It's really well preserved and a great place to stop off and see on your way back to Cuernavaca from Taxco.

  • Taxco by foot

You can catch a regular bus several times a day from Cuernavaca to this beautiful little town, but if you aren't paying attention at the end of the day you might miss the last bus heading back. It might be a lucky turn because you'll get to stay one more day!

  • Taxco, the silver town

One of the organized excursions we went on while at the spanish school was to Taxco, the old silver artisan town that originally was the location of a huge silver mine. If you casually browse for silver and compare prices (esp. at the smaller shops) you will find some really good deals. Climb up the hill above the Zocalo (main square) and admire...

  • Seriously- check out Tepoztlan (I know...

The hike up the hill is a real grind, but it's worth it and you'll sleep like a baby that night I promise. A group of collaborators were helping their friend set up and he proposed to his fiance on top of the temple while we were up there! It was cuter than hell.

  • View from the convent- Tepoztlan

If you explore a little you can find the corner balcony room with a window with a fantastic view where if you look real, real close, you can see the temple on top of the cliff

  • Did I mention you shouldn't miss...

Well, I'll just mention it again then. We only spent a day here and wished we could have stayed at least 2 or 3 days because it really was THAT great. One of those gem places you just never forget.
