No E Means Do Not Park Here

by karenincalifornia

Sayulita can get crowded, which means parking right in the town center is tough. If you see the international red NO symbol over an E, it means No Parking. Do not park there, even if everyone else is. We made the mistake of assuming that if everyone else is a scofflaw, we can be one too.We spent one hour in Sayulita, parking illegally. When we returned to the car, we had a parking ticket. However, the ticket did not show the license plate number so we thought "Ha ha, we'll just scram. They can't track us down without a license plate number."Wrong, wrong, wrong. What we found out later, when we returned our rental car, was the Sayulita cops confiscated our license plate. That's what they do in MX when you have a traffic violation. We couldn't close out our bill with Hertz until the matter was resolved. Hertz had to go back up to Sayulita and retrieve the license plate. All we could do was...

Not Surf City

by karenincalifornia

We packed all our snorkel gear but couldn't use it on the beach of San Pancho. San Pancho has a serious undertow and riptides. If you go out in the water near any rocks, you'd be dashed against the rocks. The surf was quite powerful. If you are looking for surfing, head just a bit south to Sayulita. That town is a popular surfing spot - and safe - but also quite crowded. If you are looking for a beautiful wide sandy beach with few people, and are content with wading ankle high, San Pancho is the place for you.

Rough roads

by karenincalifornia

All roads in San Pancho, once you drive off the main highway, are pitted, potholed, bumpy, broken and partly unpaved. The speed bumps are murder. Not realizing the hazards, we sailed across a speed bump at the racing speed of 10 MPH and popped a tire. My husband did the manly thing and changed the tire himself. There is no AAA in San Pancho to come to the rescue.Words of advice:Before you take your rental car, make sure it has a good spare.Drive very, very slowly over the town roads of San Pancho.Better yet, rent a Jeep.Even better, rent a horse or a donkey.
