the bicycle shop of Pedro Martinez.

This bicycle shop sells both bikes and equipment aswell as being a local tour oprator doing bike trips around Mexico.
It´s run by a former mexican olympic cyclist and i was very happy with the prices and the excellent advice i got there.
I bought some equipment there and they were very informative on cycling in the Oaxaca region and i would stronly suggest that you make your way past their little shop if you are in Oaxaca and likes cycling cause these guys know what they are talking about and they are happy to help fellow cyclists.

    Boxing Gym, Oaxaca

If you're a boxer or a boxer wannabe visiting Oaxaca, you can keep up your skills hitting heavy and speed bags at this boxing gym. There's no ring. It's a small place, but it's always full with 20-something age "contenders." I wish I knew where they fought.

Equipment: I don't know the cost to use this gym. You might want to bring your own gloves. The only equipment that I saw were heavy and speed bags. There was NO cardio machines or weightlifting equipment.

    "Old School" Weightlifting Gym, Oaxaca

by wavesport Updated Feb 5, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Front entrance

If you're looking for an "old school" weightlifting gym without any frills, the Colossus Gym is the place to be. The gym is opened 7-days a week early in the morning and closes late. The daily use cost is MX$25 (best value that I could find). If you're in Oaxaca longer, you can save money paying the monthly or yearly fee. During the day, the manager (owner?) reminds me of Paul Teutul, Sr. from the TV series "American Chopper."

The best time to use the gym is early morning and early afternoon before it gets too hot. It does get crowded in the evening when the "hard-core" lifters show up. During the day, it's mostly teenagers and 20-something guys. No one bothers you as long as you're respectful and you know what you're doing. A few women also work out.

There are "trainers" assigned to work on the floor. Their names and schedules are on a board if you need to ask for advice or a spot. I never saw any "gringos" working out here so if you want to interact with the locals, this is the place to be.

The gym could use a good cleaning. There is no A/C or fan so you'll be sweating so bring your own sweat towel and bottle water. There is no locker room.

If you've got to lift while in Oaxaca, this is a good and cheap option if you're looking for an "old school" no-frill gym.

Equipment: Overall, the equipment is old, but still very usable. There's a good variety of benches and racks with free weights (dumbbells, standard barbells, Olympic barbells). Some of the benches are wobbly. There is one cable station where you can do crossovers, seated rows, tricep pulldowns, pull-ups / chin-ups, etc. My biggest complaint about the place was that the cable station and the fixed dumbbells are not marked with their weights. On the fixed dumbbells, they mix a different variety of plates so it's hard to figure out their exact weight when the ends are capped to hide the marked weight of the plates. The dumbbells are also not organized on the rack by their weight. There are a few stationary bikes for a cardio workout.

Best equipment, but expensive: Calypso Gym, Oaxaca

by wavesport Written Feb 5, 2008

There are two Calipso gyms in Oaxaca. This one is located in the Centro Historico area. The other one is located in the Reforma area (H. Colegio Militar #321-A). The gym has long hours opening 6:00 AM and closing 11:00 PM on Mondays-Fridays and shorter hours on the weekends.

The daily use fee is a whopping MX$110. If you're in Oaxaca for a longer time, you'll probably save a lot of money if you pay the monthly or yearly fee.

This place is very, very expensive compared to other gyms in Oaxaca, but the other gyms aren't as well-equipped. Since it is so expensive, I never saw very many people using this gym. If you can afford it, this is the place to work-out. A trainer is always available.

Equipment: The Calipso gym is the best (newest) equipped and cleanest gym that I found in Oaxaca. It had the best set of dumbbells and cable machines. It also had the most numerous and best selection of cardio machines. It had a steam room, sauna, and locker rooms.

    The Training New Gym, Oaxaca

by wavesport Written Feb 5, 2008

    Front entrance

If you meet a young woman in Oaxaca who works out, it's likely she works out at The Training New Gym. This gym attracts more young women because of its low cost and its aerobic classes. It's the only gym that I visited in Oaxaca that seemed to have as many women as men working out. Its hours of operation are 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM.

The gym has some cardio machines and a small weightlifting area with an adequate, but not great, selection of free weights and machines. A heavy lifter will be disappointed since no heavy dumbbells are available. I think the heaviest dumbbell was 55 pounds. This is not a serious weightlifting gym.

For day use, the cost is MX$30. Week, month, and yearly membership fees are available.

Equipment: Bring your own sweat towel, bottle water, and lifting glove (if you use one).

If you're a guy looking to meet local women, this might be the best gym to do so.
