If in Puerto you have many...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If in Puerto you have many options to eat and most of them are very good, for Breakfast and Lunch try Carmen's cafecito, they serve good mexican food, fruitsalads, coffee, drinks, and their own fresh baked bread and cakes, and tthat is a must to eat.
And for dinner try La Casa on Zicatela Beach, bit more pricey than some but the food is deffenetly worth it.
At La Casa you can also rent Surfboards or buy good secondhand boards

At cafecito try the Ensalada de frutas deluxe, it is really yummy with fresh fruit, yoghurt and muesli.
At La Casa try the chicken in sweet almond sauce or the BBQ fish, you will be going back for more

    Restaurant La Galeria: Non-Mexican food!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you get tired of seafood and Mexican food, or if you're just looking for some variety, head straight to La Galeria. I ended up here three nights in a row!

The restaurant doesn't face the beach but has a relaxing and cheerful atmosphere. And your ankles don't get bitten by mosquitoes here (maybe they don't like garlic!).

The salads are great, pizzas are good, and the homemade ravioli stuffed with smoked salmon in a tomato cream sauce is delicious!

They also have fresh pineapple juice on top of the usual freshly squeezed orange juice.

  • Mexican idea of breakfast! - Puerto Escondido
    Mexican idea of breakfast!

These two restaurants both have tables overlooking the beach and specialize in seafood. Crotos is more expensive than Junto del Mar.

Crotos has some interesting breakfasts including the "Desayuno de la Costa" (breakfast from the coast) which, surprisingly, features not seafood but steak (see picture)!

It's as filling as it looks: fast-fry steak next to a pile of tortillas soaked in chili sauce (spicy, but not "too" much) and topped with crumbled white cheese and onions. Tasty but heavy.

I couldn't finish it and it still kept me full for most of the day!

I also had an egg breakfast and fried fish fillet at Junto del Mar and enjoyed both.

    Carmen's Patisserie: Wooden hut delight
  • Tip Rating:
  • Breakfast, lunches and light snacks in a tiny bamboo & banana leaf palapa/shack down a dusty little road (opposite Hotel Flor de Maria) with a 5 table terrace to the rear among coconut and banans trees (and other unidentifiable foliage). Basic and delightful. Coffee refills, breads, pastries, fresh orange juice. Nothing more - once they are sold out, they are sold out. Open daytime only.

Relaxed breakfasts and then buy a snack or two for the beach!

Carmen's Cafecito: California in Puerto Escondido
Amazingly owned by the same people as Carmen's Patisserie - couldn't get any more different. Located on the Zicatela beach, could be easily in laid back cafe in San Diego. Seriously hip, but very friendly - sells extensive breakfasts and lunches (pancakes, toasts etc) and endless refills of coffee. Still very good and good option for somewhere different to the palapa down the road (bit more expensive)

    Breakfasts and people watching.

    Various: Two main areas
As far as tourism is concerned, there are two main areas for eating & drinlking in PE. One is the pedestrianised area of Avenue Perez Gasga, the other along the Playa Zicatela about 2 kms further east.
Perez Gasga is more family and Mexican orientated although not exclusively so (there is a campsite at this point) and is also the main 'shopping' area (not that its very much). Restaurants and bars abound along both sides.
Playa Zicatela, with its string of low-lying hotels aimed at surfers as well as other tourists, feels a little more Californian and many of the restaurants and bars reflected/ contributed to this feeling.
But both offered a wide and high quality choice - and prices did not vary greatly between the two,

Fish is a definate highlight, but ranges from pizzas, pastas and more.

    el jardin: the freshest food!
  • Satisfaction:
  • at this point in my trip, my body was not agreeing with ANYTHING i put into it. i needed fresh, clean food, and we found el jardin. el jardin serves pizza, pasta dishes, and the best salad that is on par with american (california) cuisine. i had a beet, carrot and jicima sala that was served wth a bed of greens and oregano-infused olive oil. oh my god, i thought i had died and seen salad heaven. i really needed some clean food that i knew wouldn´t make me sick. they wash all their food with purified water, and i think the food may even be organic. i spent $5.50 on that salad, and i swear, it was the best food i had while i was in mexico.
