You are in Mexico, and there...
You are in Mexico, and there are a few thing to pay attention too while in Puerto.
Don't walk alone in the dark on the beach, you can be beat up, robbed all the things.
Don't take drugs from people, they could be undercoveragents.
Don't carry too much money with you,, leave your wallet passport and all ijn the safe of the hotel, and just take the money you want to spend.
And just watch out for the waves, they are very, very, very dangerous. Now with the lifeguards it is lot safer than it used to be, but still, they are only human capable of just some, not all.
And It is Mexico, so there are scorpions, so always check your shoes and bags and clothes before putting them on on stikking your hand to it, even though a sting won't kill you if you are healthy, they do hurt and the worst ones will make you sick.
Big waves, strong rips
Playa Zicatela has one of the biggest waves in the world. And even when they are small they break with great force. So don't swim there when the waves are breaking, and when they are not breaking, just swim if there are lifegueards. The rips are still strong and can swep you out the ocean.
Just be cautious if you swim in the waves, the undertow can be quite strong. Watch for the signals from lifeguards, and pay attention to the colours of the flags - red is dangerous, yellow is moderately dangerous and green is safe. Even in the green zone, the current swiped the goggle set right off my head and carried it out to sea. Something to think about if you're wearing lose swimwear or jewellery, etc.

getting worse in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca Mexico
i lived there for a year and at first it was great but then u get to see the real culture, and it has turned itself into a tourist resort town - not on a big scale - but the bad things tourist towns attract this town excels in.. unfortunately... I could not even go walking alone in the day (beach, town, cliffs, market or even SuperChe) without begin followed!! The majority of the local surfer crowd are horndogs they must think they are "Hot Stuff" with something to offer women? Tho I do supposed the idiot tourist girl does the 'hankypanky' with them, and they expect all foreigners to have the same feelings.. NOT. The police are clearly thugs, sad but true. If anything at all happens to you (of course it is Mexico the police for has a reasonably labeled BAD) Raped, mugged, drugged anything you are pretty much out of luck. The drug culture there is growing expeditiously and the ex-pats are often a part of it too. Women trafficking is present sad but I've met a young girl who's own dad was offering her up. So that is sad! very sad they sell baked goods..... anyway yeah it just getting worse a lot has to do with the bad economy everyone is hungry for a job that the town is growing due to people leaving the rural areas looking for work the animosity between the Mexican people themselves is obvious (animosity towards 'Rica' tourists was always there) Just when u think you've found a nice beautiful area on earth it does become very unattractive unfortunately. a few ex-pats I've talked with are simply not coming back to Puerto Escondido for their yearly vacation, even tho they have been continually vacationing there for the past 12 years and on some cases 20 years. they just do not feel safe, and the prices are not exactly cheap! groceries and clothing in puerto are expensive so most of the elderly are heading to Florida... I've been traveling in and out of Mexico for quite some time and I do not think i will go back anymore. My last drive back up home was so stressful, when all u do i pray the whole time u do not get stopped by cops(or fake cops) it kinda shows there is somethings wrong...

Late night beach jaunts
There have been problems in the past with muggings and, on one occasion in 1997, the murder of a tourist on the beach late at night. Whilst the authorities have provided improved lighting in the Municipal Beach area, it is advised against walking on the beach, particularly alone, late at night.
only one local atm machine
Beware! There is only one easily accessible ATM machine at Zicatela beach, and it broke while I was there, not to be repaired until the following Monday. We had to take a cab into the city to find an ATM machine. Be sure to bring plenty of cash.
It being the west coast and the Pacific Ocean, the waves and currents can be dangerous for 'idle' swimming - especially Zicatela Beach, the surfers paradise. Whilst there are sheltered spots, this should be taken into account, especially where small children are accompanying.
