 | | | | Alebrijes: Typical gifts from Oaxaca | | | | | |
These strange-colored monsters or alebrijes were invented by Pedro Linares, who saw them in a dream when he was 30, and very sick. While he lay in bed, unconscious, he dreamed of a strange and different place, rather like a forest with trees, animals, clouds, sky, rocks and other things, and where all the animals had turned into odd, unknown creatures. He saw a donkey with butterflyís wings, a rooster with an eagleís head and others that all shouted the word, Alebrijes. The animals began to shout louder and louder, Alebrijes, Alebrijes, Alebrijes! The sound was terrible and he wanted to get away. A man told him that it still wasnít time for him to be there and that he would have to start walking in order to find the exit. Later, he came across a narrow window, climbed through, and suddenly awoke. When Pedro was able to get out of bed, he began to remember his dream and wanted his family and other people to see these animals. So, he took some paper and began to mold the figures he had seen; he then painted them like those he saw in his dream Now, Miguel Linares (his son), Paula GarcÌa (daughter in law), Ricardo Linares and Miguel Linares (grandchildren) have continued the tradition of making Alebrijes. However, aside from these ones, there are hundreds of other Alebrijes that have been molded from papier mache, painted with bright colors and covered with mysterious drawings.

 | | | | casa de las artesanias: 100% artisan owned and produced | | | | | |
Casa de Las Artesanias is a collective of around 80 family workshops from all over Oaxaca. There are different salas for different items such as pottery, clothing, jewelry, knives, woven goods, and more. The prices are very affordable; they're not significantly higher than the street vendors, and maybe even cheaper if you don't bargain well. Also, the quality and variety are great. Everything is 100% handmade, and you can be assured the profits are going to the makers and not mostly to intermediaries (which some street vendors can be). If you don't have the time to visit Teotitlan del Valle (renowned for weaving) or San Bartolo (for distinct unique black clay pottery), you can find these goods at this shop. The dyes used for the woven items are 100% natural as well.
1. Teotitlan del Valle weavings 2. San Bartolo black pottery 3. Fashioned tin pieces 4. Handmade scarves 5. These wooden, brightly painted toys 6. Oaxacan paintings
I bought pottery between a range of 50cents (a bowl with painted flowers) to $11 (a mid-sized San Bartolo vase with unique etched design). My wall hanging from Teotitlan depicts a Zapotec story and was under $40, and a Teotitlan wool purse was around $13. A painting from a local artist was $55.
