Alebrijes: Typical gifts from Oaxaca

by AnnaLupilla

These strange-colored monsters or alebrijes were invented by Pedro Linares, who saw them in a dream when he was 30, and very sick. While he lay in bed, unconscious, he dreamed of a strange and different place, rather like a forest with trees, animals, clouds, sky, rocks and other things, and where all the animals had turned into odd, unknown creatures. He saw a donkey with butterflyís wings, a rooster with an eagleís head and others that all shouted the word, Alebrijes. The animals began to shout louder and louder, Alebrijes, Alebrijes, Alebrijes! The sound was terrible and he wanted to get away. A man told him that it still wasnít time for him to be there and that he would have to start walking in order to find the exit. Later, he came across a narrow window, climbed through, and suddenly awoke. When Pedro was able to get out of bed, he began to remember his dream and wanted his family...

Local Ladies with Hand-Made Items

by ViajesdelMundo

This is not actually a shop, but right at the ruins of MITLA, there are local ladies who have many hand-made items such as childrens clothes and knitted bags which are very useful, for sale right over the CACTUS FENCE! They have a step stool up from their yard on the other side.It is a chance to have an encounter with the local people and they like to show their work. I loved the little bags and was able to bargain a little, with the purchase of several, being PERFECT gift mementos and of course one for myself!(Outside the Church, there are also larger 'market stalls' with lots of local items for sale, whch I found to be lower than in the city, but it might be best to peruse some of the markets there first, to have an informed idea---of course, the rule is, if you see something you like and want, BUY IT! as often the hand-made items are not closely duplicated elsewhere.) Children's...

Mezcal - Southern Mexico's Tequila

by chenglinlee

In Oaxaca you will encounter whole bunch of mezcal stores. Mezcal is the brother liquor of tequila. the term "worm with tequila" is acutally a misnomer. Tequila/worm combination actually does not exist. It is actually here in Oaxaca that "Mezcal con gusano" (Mezcal with worm) is invented. The most common brand of mezcal in Oaxaca is called Oro de Oaxaca but other brands exist and are just as good or even better than Oro de Oaxaca. When you walk into these stores, you will be greeted by the ladies who works there. There you will be able to sample all the different flavors of Mezcal. My favorite is Almandra (Almond) which is kinda syrupy tasting. Each bottle should be around $10 bucks. I used to buy these 10 bottles at a time to give to people and also I befriended a salesperson there so I got really good deal.

rug town

by Travmad

More than one shop in rug town. The town consists of plenty of small family shops making and selling wool rugs. Be carefull about the material and the dyes used in manufacturing. The natural materials and dyes are the better choice. $50. and up.

casa de las artesanias: 100% artisan owned and produced

by ohswaymyway

Casa de Las Artesanias is a collective of around 80 family workshops from all over Oaxaca. There are different salas for different items such as pottery, clothing, jewelry, knives, woven goods, and more. The prices are very affordable; they're not significantly higher than the street vendors, and maybe even cheaper if you don't bargain well. Also, the quality and variety are great. Everything is 100% handmade, and you can be assured the profits are going to the makers and not mostly to intermediaries (which some street vendors can be). If you don't have the time to visit Teotitlan del Valle (renowned for weaving) or San Bartolo (for distinct unique black clay pottery), you can find these goods at this shop. The dyes used for the woven items are 100% natural as well. 1. Teotitlan del Valle weavings2. San Bartolo black pottery3. Fashioned tin pieces4. Handmade scarves5. These wooden,...

Una tiendita...

by josecarlos

This small stores are typical in Oaxaca... people in towns are not yet accustomed to the new super markets... They still buy things at the shop around the corner...I like this tradition; you can always talk to the owner and meet people there..the name of this store, for those who speak spanish, was one of my nicknames at that time...
