    Cholula

Cholula is a city and district located in the center west of the state of Puebla about 30 km from the Popocatepetl Volcano. The city and district are divided into two, San Pedro Cholula and San Andrés Cholula.
The name Cholula has its origin in the ancient Nahuatl word cholollan, which means "place of refuge".
Cholula is best known for its Great Pyramid, with the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios sanctuary on top and its numerous churches including the Convento de San Gabriel.

You can watch my photo of Cholula and the Convento de San Gabriel on my Google Earth Panoramio Cholula from the Pyramid.

Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church

The Church of Our Lady of Remedies was built on top of the Great Quetzalcoatl's Pyramid in 1575. Its style is neoclassic decorated with 24 carat gold sheets.
The base on which the church is built is the largest pyramid of the ancient world, being 54 metres high and shaped by several superimposed structures over the course of six centuries.
All around the building is a large porch where you can admire the city, the archeological site, an amazing view of the volcanoes, and if you're lucky a little bit of Puebla.

    Great Pyramid of Cholula

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Written Feb 25, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Great Pyramid of Cholula is a huge complex located in Cholula near Puebla.
It is also known as Tlachihualtepetl or "Artificial Mountain".
The pyramid stands about 60 metres above the surrounding plain, and in its final form it measured 400 by 400 metres. This base is four times the size of that of Pharaoh Khufu's Great Pyramid of Giza.
It’s the largest pyramid as well as the largest monument ever constructed anywhere in the world, with a total volume estimated at over 4.45 million cubic meters, even larger than that of the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is about 2.5 million cubic meters. However the Great Pyramid of Giza is higher at 138.8 metres.
This pyramid is a temple that has traditionally been viewed as having been dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl. The architectural style of the building was closely linked to that of Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico.

You can watch my photo of Cholula on my Google Earth Panoramio Great Pyramid of Cholula 1.

    Cholula: Museum and Archeological Tunnels

by darthmilmo Written Feb 25, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

My tour started at the museum. From there, I took the walk through the Indiana Jones style tunnels that cross the pyramid. This tunnels where dug out by archeologist in the late 1900's. It provided the proof that Cholula is indeed a pyramid and not a hill as Hernan Cortez thought when he conquered this area.

The biggest pyramid of the Western Hemisphere

by ronaldpk Written Mar 22, 2006

Cholula is a small town about 15-30 minutes from Puebla. It is famous for its pyramid that is hidden inside a hill which has a church on the top. The Spaniards tried to repress the local history by building this church but they really failed. The archeologists dug deep tunnels that could be visited and on one side of the hill you can admire the remnants of this once huge structure with stairs, altars, sculptures. It's really amazing! On the horizon, you can see a volcano which reminds of the uniqueness of this structure.
Actually, I also liked the church - Los Remedios - very baroque, reminded me of one church in Trakai, Lithuania and made me think of my own cultural, pagan roots as my Baltic ancestors were also Pagans till 14th century and were forced by Poles and Teutonic Order to convert to Christianity but the local Gods are still worshipped throughout Lithuania. Aren't the histories of Mexico and Lithuania related in some ways? The universal truths can be captured at many places on this planet!

Cholula: Outer Ruins and the hill

by darthmilmo Written Feb 25, 2003

Afterwards, a short walk takes you to the outside ruins. Past the ruins and the library, I came upon the side of the pyramid. I climbed up the pyramid, which looks more like a hill (no wonder Cortez thought it was a hill). To my disappointment, the Iglesia de los Remedios is still being restored due to the 1999 earthquake. On the way down the hill (and up as well) one can see an area of inner parts of the pyramid exposed. If you look closely you can see it was made of "adobe" bricks.

    Pyramide

The pyramide is the must see activity. There are tour guides that can take you around and explain the different structures, as well as go inside. It doesn't cost much, and worth the money.
