1810: Outdoor restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • 1810 Restaurant, an outdoor restaurant bar, located at Plaza de Armas. The date, 1810, refers to the year Mexico declared its independence. It is always crowded and offers live piano or guitar music. Open all day long. As it is very close to state government offices, you may encounter with high officials, and if you are lucky, even with the governor himself.
I should take another picture, this one is not very good.

    JBJ: Let's rock!
  • Tip Rating:
  • On Bernardo Quintana Boulevard, just one block from the Aqueduct, is JBJ Bar. The Jota Be Jota Bar is the most famous one in Queretaro. It has been restored 2 times, one after a fire which destroyed it. There you can enjoy live music, mainly rock. Its popularity has declined but it still is crowded every weekend.

La Catrina: Folk music bar = peña
  • Tip Rating:
  • La Catrina bar. This kind of bar, which offers folk music, trova style, is called "peña". La Catrina means The Elegant Lady, and refers to the picture in background, artwork by Jose Guadalupe Posada, famous engraver of early 20th century. This is a site for listening, not for dancing. Nice food, varied drinks.

Go to the andadores (walkways) area in downtown. There are lots of open air restaurants and bars. Others are inside colonial-era houses. Some offer live music. For modern discos and bars go to Avenida Constituyentes Oriente (East Constituyentes Avenue).
Picture: People use to gather here and in surrounding walkways.

Van Gogh: ' Van Gogh '
  • Tip Rating:
  • Van Gogh is one of the coolest dance clubs in Queretaro. It is very classy and has a huge dance floor and has a raised stage which people dance on that want to be noticed. Most everyone that hangs out here is a "fresa" (snob in spanish) and they usually have money. I have not been here since 2000 but I have heard that it is still one of the top clubs in the city. The European styling and paintings in this club reflect the name Van Gogh and the open layout is very cool. One of my best times here was the "Fiesta de Espuma" (Foam Party) where the whole bar is filled with people dancing in huge mountains of Foam. If you like to dance and have a good time, don't miss this place!

Very Classy Club. No Coat and tie required but No Jeans or Tennis Shoes will be allowed (unless you're a gringo they may let it pass..) Dress Nice.

    EL "Q": El "Q"
Queretaro is a very fickle place when it comes to the popular "discos" (dance clubs).
At one time the "Q" was only for "nacos" , slang for weirdos or nerds, however during my last visit it was the place to be.
The "Q" is the largest and most beautiful dance club that I have ever been to. It is up on the side of a hill/mountain and it has a breathtaking view of Queretaro at night. The side of the club which faces the city is all glass and at night the city of Queretaro lit up is on of the prettiest sights I can recall.
The club itself is a multi level club which holds an estimated 1000 people, or more. The dance floor is huge! There are several level that have "bars" which serve drinks and the atmosphere at this place is always electric. Granted I am speaking from experience in 2001, but from what I have heard this is still the place to party in Queretaro.

This is a very classy establishment so you must dress to impress. Nice slacks and shirts for men, skirts or dresses for women. No jeans or Sneakers.

Jota Be Jota: Jota Be Jota
Jota Be Jota Bar is one of the if not the oldes bar in Queretaro. It has much history and has been through alot. Including being burnt down and rebuilt all over again. This bar is special to me because it was where I had my first kiss with my now wife, Osiris. This bar is unique because offers both live rock music in the front half of the establishment...then in the back part it is a "disco" or nightclub where you can get your groove on to the most recent techno and house type music. The Rock part of the club is a three level bar which has plenty of seating upstairs and is always very packed below and usually requires a little pushing to get through. In the basement level it offers pool tables and other games. This is one of my favorite bars of all time since it has so much history to me. I have visited Queretaro on differenc occassions in 1996, and 2000 and this bar has been consistently the place to be during my travels and I look forward to going back here this year , 2004.

More casual but try to dress nice. There is live music (rock) in the bar part, so you can dress pretty casual. The dance club part in the back however requires a little nicer outfit, so if you wanna dance, try to dress pretty classy.
