By car, toll highway from Mexico City has 2 toll booths, $5 dollars each. From San Luis Potosi, no toll. From León, 2 toll booths, $5 each.

By bus, from Mexico City prices range from about $12 to $16, from Guadalajara $20 - $25, from Monterrey $35 - $40.

By plane, from Mexico City about $50 dollars, from Monterrey about $80.

Train is not recommended. It is not as modern as in Europe.

All prices in US dollars and current March 2002.
Local buses range from $0.40 to $0.70 dollars, depending on tipe of bus, not on distance (as in many cities).

Taxi initial fare is $1.50 dollars.

Picture: me at the Mega Bandera (Mega Flag) in the city's east side. It stands 100 meters tall. Many Mexican cities have a Mega Bandera.

Getting there by bus

The ETN Buses

There are five bus companies that run services to Querétaro from Mexico City.
I took the ETN service.
The companies are called ETN, Primera Plus, Futura, Omnibus de Mexico and Fletcha Amarilla. It takes about 3 hours to get there.

Transportation Inside the City

Querétaro is a city made for pedestrians, you can go almost everywhere walking, but there are some places, like shopping centers that you must take something to get ther.

The buses are the best of the country, many routes, check that the route you are taking is correct (ask someone, everybody is very nice), there are luxury buses called TransMetro, you can buy a week pass for these buses.

The goverment create a service specialy for turist, ask in your hotel about the tour buses from "La secretaria de turismo"

The taxis or cabs are like in NY yellow with litlle black squares, these are very secure, and cheap, the trip will cost at least $2.00 usd or $20.00 pesos, always ask the price before you ride them, inside the taxi there is a table with the prices from place to place.

If you are going to drive, just remember that in Querétaro the people drive to fast, and if they consider necesary they will overpass you by the right. It's easy to locate a place in the city, is very well planned. If you get lost just ask for the "Av. 5 de Febrero" or "Blvd. Bernardo Quintana" or "Carretara Mexico-Querétaro" these avs. form an inner circle of the city.

As a turist you probably never leave the downtown. So take a good pair of shoes and walk.

If you know where you are, and you know what's near you, it's pretty easy to get around. The bus costs 5 pesos, which is roughly 50 cents, and using this method of transportation is a great way to get to know the city in a short time. Walking is STILL the best, but this gets you around pretty well. I live by Mercado de la Cruz, and all roads lead to Rome...it seems really easy to get a bus to Mercado or to Zaragoza, which is down by Hidalgo. Get familiar with the names, and take the time to play here: if you're on the corner, and the bus comes along, get on. It has to come back by the same place at some point, right?* *Please note, American logic does not necessarily translate to Mexican culture/customs/transportation.

And I paid $40 U.S. to go from Brookline to Logan!

Go outside. Look up. Hold out your hand. Wave it slightly. Magic! A cab. I came back from Tequisquiápan via cab a few weeks ago. 300 pesos...about $30 U.S. Tequis is an hour away. You can get pretty much anywhere in the city for 3 or 4 bucks. However, if I hear, "¿Tienes muchos novios en México? ¿No? ¿No quiéres a los Mexicanos?" one more time, I will scream.

Primera Plus from MEX Airport to Queretaro

They are a subsidiary of Flecha Amarilla. Luxury bus with reclining seats, footrests, lunch included, American feature films dubbed in Spanish. They leave frequently, about every 30 min. Cost is 220 Pesos (equivalent to about $20) one way. Takes 3 and a half hours. Queretaro's bus terminal is outside the city. You need to buy a ticket for the taxi - ticket booth is clearly marked. Taxi to center is 30 Pesos (less than $3). They will drop you at your specified location.

Taxis

We walked almost everywhere in Queretaro. It is very safe. We walked way out of the historic area to the Statue of Benito Juarez and never felt uneasy. There were times we did take taxis if we were going to a restaurant not within walking distance at night. Taxis in the city should be no more than 20 Pesos. We found drivers not at all inclined to ask a higher price. It was just always 20 pesos. They are nice and some speak English well, others not at all.
