There is a salesman named Jorge Penkoff working at Sireni's resort selling timeshare. He used to have a RE business in Playa del Carmen and is now being sued for fraud and theft as he stole $15,000 from a foreigner, and is also being evicted from his home for unpaid rent. Do not buy anything, give him money or listen to any of his lies. There are many dishonest RE salesmen but this guy is the worst. Please beware!

Safety in the Riviera Maya coast.
Many people have contacted us recently about safety concerns. The national US media has cast a dark cloud over an entire country based on incidents and problems that are primarily along the Mexico-US border.
The Rivera Maya is fine, there are no drug wars happening. We have staff on the coast with families; their kids go to school like normal, we are not living in fear, or flak jackets! Lots of people are on vacation as I type, enjoying the area. In a FOX News interview on March 11 it was even said that the "crimes are not against tourists". The problems are between cartels and government agencies that want to put a stop to them. Cancun and the Riviera Maya are safe. You can rest easy coming to the Riviera Maya. Read the recent travel alert from the US State Department on February 20. It does not mention the Rivera Maya.

During 4 vacations to Akumal, members of our group were robbed three times. My teenage daughter and her friend were actually in front of our rented accomodations when someone climbed onto the balcony, entered through an unlocked door and stole cash ($750). Frighening. That same year, two expensive dive suits, left to dry on a porch, disappeared. The next ysear, a camera was taken from a locked Villa with no evidence of forced entry. When thi fact was presented to the landlord, she became hostile and actually threatened us with "problems" if we reported this to the local police. (We suspected "the help"). Another year, a purse left on the beach under a towel, in front of our Villa with 20 people mingling around having lunch, was stolen. (All we saw were two men walking by and no one noticed when they took the purse). Again, reported to the landlady who "suggested" we not call police since it would be to our detriment. Needless to say, we no longer frequent this beautiful place. While this type of thing happens, the absolute disregard for our rights and discouragement from reporting the incidents...with threats, left us cold.

When you see a wastebasket beside the stool or in the stall with toilet tissue in it, do not flush paper down the toilet, instead drop it in the basket.
Often the toilet will overflow if you put paper in it.

I love Playa del Carmen. It is the anti cancun. I love Akumal because it is the anti Playa Del Carmen! Unlike Playa you won't find the hundreds of restaurants or night clubs. What you will find is the...
