It's a small island with a Caribbean look and several little sites to visit. I went on an organized tour - that is, we went by boat and then had four hours on our own before lunch at the beach and then going back to Cancun again. I hired a bike and went all over the island to visit the natural preserves, the delphinarium, another place with sharks, the archaelogical sites, a small marinestation where one of the workers gave me a little tour and explained me about the different animals in the sea surrounding the island including the giant turtles, and to San Miguel, the Caribbean stylish and very colourful, beautiful lille town. All this in one place - you're bound to love it!
This an activity present in so many parks, but I found that in Cozumel's Chankanaab park it was much more natural because, although the dolphins movement was obviously restricted by the usual barriers / nets, they weren't in a tank, but in a confined area of the ocean, near the coast and inside the Chankanaab park. It was great seeing them almost like if they were out on the wild.
It's a great experience to be able to go snorkeling in such beautiful waters. I've heard that Cozumel has some of the best scuba diving in Mexico. The tour I went on also treats you to lunch in Cozumel (not that great) then they give you a couple of hours to kill in downtown Cozumel to shop or drink.
Cozumel
We took a ferry over to Cozumel, Mexico's largest island.
The town square is right on the main beach and is a great place to sit drinking a beer and people watch or visit the shops that sell almost everything.
In Cancun/Cozumel there is plenty to do for everyone, shopping is great. Many of the small markets you come across will have the same junk, you'll see it over and over again. But, there are many vendors who sell local Mexican crafts that are pretty cool, you can find some decent prices on silver jewlery, and as I found real CUBAN CIGARS (a luxury most Americans don't get to enjoy!). See my warnings section about silver and cigar shopping...
Also, there are malls that have your regular retail stores, just in case you forgot something.
In Cozumel you can rent a scooter, or a jeep. There is a National Park where you can snorkel-scuba dive or just hang on the beach. Went crusing around the island, looking for some beach cafe's.
COZUMEL IS FAMOUS FOR SCUBA DYVING. EXCELLENT CAVES TO DO THAT AND GET TO SEE THE MOST RANDOM FISHES
This is our second beach cafe stop before going back to town. Can't remember the name, but they gave us some nachos & salsa and the next day my body could feel the effects.
