The main reason to come to Coba is to see the Mayan ruins of what is thought to be the largest of all Mayan cities. Only discovered at the end of the 19th century and moreorless re-abandoned until 1973, it is estimated that there are some 6500 structures in the city. Only a few have been been excavated and partly restored - and even these are dispersed round a large area and require (relatively easy) treks through jungle paths.

There are times when you believe that you are discovering the ruins for yourself.
