Favorite thing: My favorite thing of Isla Holbox is that while one is in this island, time sits at a standstill. As a fellow backpacker pointed out, time in Isla Holbox revolves around relaxation and rest: you take a siesta and then eat; you take another siesta and then go out for a swim; you take another siesta and then go on a boat trip; you take a siesta and then work or read a little, you take a siesta and then go out at night to see a ball game in the main plaza; you finally sleep some more at night. Ah, wouldn't life be great if it were this way all the time? Life in the island is nothing more than a siesta induced state of freedom. It's a perfect relaxed vacation spot... one with few tourists and obstacles.

Favorite thing: Isla Holbox is unpaved and simple. Depending on what time of the year you go, you may just find yourself being the only one there. Both of these qualities make for an out of this world experience. It's awesome the way locals co-exist with nature.

Favorite thing: Only DEET works as an insect repellant on the island, and it's just not sold there. Bring your own. We use Cutter Deep Woods towelettes. They pack easily and work.

Isla Holbox is a very beautiful and quiet litte island in the Yucatan. We chose this remote island because it's way less "touristy" than Cozumel or Isla Mujeres. If you're looking for some privacy in...
