    DEET

    by 1Sharla Updated Jan 26, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: We have tried to use the bug repellant sold in little stores, or even on the island. For some reason it doesnt faze the bugs like Deet. I would recommend carrying it (after applying it) with you everywhere on this island.

    Pack light--why not?

Luggage and bags: I would pack light when going to this isla. The travelling to get there is the hardest thing. Then getting a taxi back to take the ferry out of town can sometimes be hard to do, and you may have to tote your bags. Especially Sunday morning.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: It is generally warm on this island, pack shorts mostly, but light pants and light long sleeve shirt may be appreciated at certain times, because the bugs dont play--even with deterent sometimes they still get you. And it can get a little nippy at night certain times of year.

Miscellaneous: I know that the picture (I got from a camping supply website) looks ridiculous, but you may remember this picture while on the island and if you are there in the dead of summer you may wish for this silly little outfit. I am telling you, the bugs dont play! :)

    Plastic, Ziplock Bags

by Servacat Written Jan 5, 2007

Miscellaneous: There are shells, more shells, and a few more shells and pieces of dead coral that wash onto the beach. I can never resist picking a few up to take home with me. Plastic ziplock bags are a great for this. *Occassionaly there are creatures living in the shells closest to the water. Make sure "no one is home" before you take a shell. If someone is home, leave it on the beach.

    Mosquito Repellent

by PelLihi Written Sep 25, 2007

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Buy the mosquito repellent ON the island. They have a special one for the species on this island. It works better than the ones from back home!

Miscellaneous: There is NO bank on Isla Holbox and NO ATMs. Even exchanging money can be a hassle and sometimes not possible.
Bring Mexican Pesos or U.S.D., nothing else works. Many businesses do not accept credit cards or travelers checks, cash only.

It is cheaper to bring your own food if you plan to cook. You can eat the fish you catch! You can of course buy water on the island.
