This airline, Skyservice, out of Toronto, has the cheapest fare to Canun/Mayan Riviera that I have found. You can't buy directly from them, you must purchase from a tour operator. I usually go to this web site, www.selloffairfares.com, however, www.sunquest.ca/ can also get you there. Selloffaifares is often quite busy.

    GETTING AROUND THE ISLAND
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many ways to get around Isla Mujeres. The most popular mode seems to be the golf carts. We were told we could rent the carts for $45.00 for the day.
Other modes of transportation were--bicycles, scooters, taxis and my favourite --by foot.

Sunday, January 16, Hans and I went to ISLA MUJERES for the day. We started off taking the R1 Bus, from the hotel zone(6.50 pesos or .65 U.S. You can use U.S. dollars but you will get change in pesos) to Puerto Juarez. Just look at the writing at the top of the bus if it says "Pto Juarez" This takes you to the GRAN PUERTO where you will take the ferry to Isla Mujeres.

    Getting there from Cancun
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are not going on a booze cruise or catamaran trip, you can take the public ferry from Cancun for a small fee of about 35 pesos (roughly $3US). I think we went from Puerto Juarez several years ago when we went and it appears that UltraMar, which also runs ferries to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, also has ferries going to Isla Mujeres from Cancun for the same price. The attached website has some information on the ferries.

I actually liked this method of getting to Isla Mujeres better than the booze cruise, you could go at your leisure and there were plenty of opportunities to find someone to take you out snorkeling for a fraction of the cost.

    take the slow ferry
  • Tip Rating:
  • when you go to isla mujeres, then forget about the fast boat, eventhough almost everyone gets on it.
it's double price and you are stuck inside like sardines, with no chance to take photos.
the slow boat is cheap and allows you to take photos of the scenery.
and it's not that much slower any way.

Isla Mujeres is a convenient daytrip from Cancun, and a very worthwhile one.

I arrived at Isla Mujeres on one of the bright yellow UltraMar catamarans from Puerto Juarez. The port of Puerto Juarez is just 3km to the north of Cancun and can be reached quickly and cheaply by regular buses, taxis or even on foot from downtown Cancun.

The UltraMar catamarans leave for Isla Mujeres every 30 minutes during the day and complete the crossing to Isla Town (the main town on Isla Mujeres) in about 20 minutes.

At the time of my visit in February 2006 the cost of a return ticket to Isla Mujeres was 70 Pesos (7 USD).

The UltraMar catamarans take passengers only, no motor vehicles. If you want to take a car across to Isla Mujeres, you can catch a car ferry (several of which make the crossing each day) from Punta Sam (just north of Puerto Juarez).

If you are staying in the Hotel Zone in Cancun, you can take a small boat to Isla Mujeres from various parts of the beach.

Upon arrival at the ferry terminal in Isla Town, you can hire a golf cart, a moped or a bicycle to explore the rest of the island, but Isla Town is small enough to be explored on foot.

    On foot or by golfcart
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are just interested in seeing the town and doing a little shopping, it can be done on foot, the downtown area is just 4 blocks by 6 blocks and from where the boats from Cancun dock you can walk from one side of the island to the other as it's only a 1/2 mile wide. If you are planning on going outside of downtown, Isla Mujeres is 5 miles long so you can rent a scooter or golfcart from one of the many folks hanging around the docks.

There is a taxi stand just to the left (north side) of the ferry dock, and the posted rate to where our hotel is was 54 pesos. However, once we were away from the taxi stand, the going rate was 40 pesos to just about everywhere on the island. There may be a higher fee if you want to get out in busy areas. Just make sure you arrange the price before you get in the taxi.

To get to Isla Mujeres, I shared a taxi direct from Cancun airport to Puerto Juarez. Here you can catch a ferry for the 11km ride to the island. Once here, you will be able to find accomodations within walking distance of the port.
