    ???

While walking / hiking through Xcaret, I turned my head and saw this!!! Now, I'm not sure what the deal was, but this guy evidently was doing it as an act / show, or he was REALLY getting in touch with his roots! Either way, it was kind of scary.......!

A Mayan kid with a baby

by Umfufu Written Sep 4, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We found out that at the age of 14 a Mayan girl was allowed to have a baby. Not only allowed but it is normal. The families are big and a normal women would get about 6 till 10 kids. The boys were there to get them the materials for food (oak, wood, sugar) and the girls made the food, get the water from the well, making house and things like that.
And when the parents get to old to do some things its normal that the kids take over their places.
But there was also a school in the village where they had to go to. So when has 14 year old girl time to make a baby??

Get your own water part III

OOoooooops i think i made a mistake. This bike tire / wheel wasnt for a bucket.
Looking at this picture i think they are even smarter then i think they were.
Well its a good thing its not a heavy duty cause the ladies have to do it. But then again.... maybe they can invent a way to get the water easy into the little houses, cause the most of the houses are more then 50 meters away.
And yes... this is also a ladies job.
The reason for the strange purple colour of this picture, is because this one is take through the window of the Van.

Get your own water part II

If you think you arrived in an area where stupid people live then you are wrong. If you dont have the money to buy things you have to be smart .... and these people were very smart. Pulling the bucket in the well all the way up can be very hard, so what do you do with a bike that is not used anymore (or can be used for a better case?)
You make it so, that you have a catrol. And so the bucket can come up and go down a lot easier.
    Smart or what?

    Get you own water

In the middle of this little town (with no name) there is a well. Maybe they can use it for making a wish, but surtainly they can use it for getting fresh (?) drinking water.
The well is very deep and the girls (yes they still are used for the housekeeping part) have to bring a bucket all the way down and all the way up.

    Grow up your own food

Chickens are easy to breed. So when you start with just 2 you can have enough of them for the whole family.
Chickens are better off then in the European countries. With us they have to sitt in small cages with 20 others on her lipp. Here they can just run till its time to be eaten.
