5th Ave is the main shopping street in this area. Its around 3km long. There are alot of bars and food places down there is makes it lively. Its good for shopping on a night time as the shops are open late but the street comes to life with street dancers, musical people and painters etc. It comes very colour and alot more lively than in the day time. Worth a stroll around in the day and in the night as it becomes a different place.

The Tequila Barrel is my favourite drinking spot whenever I'm in downtown Playa. It's the best spot to sit and drink and just watch the world go by down 5th Avenue. This is where you should go to chat and have a few with friends before you go out to the Blue Parrot or the Captain's. The seats are wood, teak, and leather--a very comfy atmosphere to kick back in.
There's a vast array of beers, mixed drinks, and a whole wall of different tequilas to choose from. The margaritas come in massive glasses.
The waiters/waitress are very quick to deliver the first round of drinks to your table but can be slow as molasses after that (you may even have a hard time getting their attention.) Slow service is the bar's biggest drawback.
Apparently there is a modest Tex-Mex menu at the Tequila Barrel, but I've never seen anybody eating there--just drinking.
Sometimes there's a live Spanish, blues, or reggae band playing here, but they generally wrap up early in the night (before 10:00 p.m.).
However, "location, location, location," that's what the Tequila Barrel is really all about. It sits right at the heart of Playa--people watchers, this is the place for you.
Playa del Carmen is alive at night. You can walk the pedestrian only 5th Ave. until well after midnight. You can enjoy the many restaurants, bars and retail shops. People watching is super, too.
Dress Code:
Casual beachwear is acceptable everywhere.
You can swing the night away at many of the bars in town, while listening to regae, rock, jazz, blues, or local music..
5th Ave. in Playa del Carmen is the place to go for a good meal in any of the many retaurants or to drop into any of the many bars for some drinks or dancing.
