Just One of the fire dancers! by whitneyone It was friday night and we had been walking every inch of 5th to see what was new. Walkin back on the beach we decided to stop for a cocktail and lay on one of the LOVELY lounges for two, on the beach in front of the Blue Parrot. After a while the lights dimmed and the fire dancing began! Wish my camera could have caught these people in action more clearly. It was amazing.
Come as you are, baby! Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Starts on 5th, ends on the beachDirections: Closer to the north end of 5th than the south. Easy walking from anywhere

The Blue Parrot has a long history of being the place to go and be seen around midnight. It's called a Playa Del Carmen "landmark". Crowds begin to come in around 11:00 p.m. and it stays busy for several hours, before the crowd moves on elsewhere (to Capitan Tutix). The Parrot has sand floors, swing seats at the bar, a stage for dancing, and a new sitting area with pillows, candles, and carpets. Often there are fire dance performers. I had a great time dancing on the small stage and trying not to fall off (after 8 or 9 bottles of beer!). Drinks are very reasonably priced. Many people get dressed up and others show up looking dishevelled and wearing just their beach duds. The crowd is mixed--It's generally younger and many locals go here on their night off. If it ever gets too crowded or noisy at the Blue Parrot, or you just need a few minutes break, you can duck right around the fence and have a drink at the Costa Del Mar and chill out listening to reggae--they are literally a few dozen feet apart. You may not even recognize the Parrot as the same place during the day--it's unusually quiet, only a few people sitting on the swings, a great place to have a drink, look out over the ocean, and watch the beach world go by. If you have only one night out in Playa, make sure the Blue Parrot is one of your stops! There's no cover charge.

Tequila Barrel (2005) by Kaspian The Tequila Barrel is my favourite drinking spot whenever I'm in downtown Playa. It's the best spot to sit and drink and just watch the world go by down 5th Avenue. This is where you should go to chat and have a few with friends before you go out to the Blue Parrot or the Captain's. The seats are wood, teak, and leather--a very comfy atmosphere to kick back in. There's a vast array of beers, mixed drinks, and a whole wall of different tequilas to choose from. The margaritas come in massive glasses. The waiters/waitress are very quick to deliver the first round of drinks to your table but can be slow as molasses after that (you may even have a hard time getting their attention.) Slow service is the bar's biggest drawback. Apparently there is a modest Tex-Mex menu at the Tequila Barrel, but I've never seen anybody eating there--just drinking. Sometimes there's a live Spanish, blues, or reggae band playing here, but they generally wrap up early in the night (before 10:00 p.m.). However, "location, location, location," that's what the Tequila Barrel is really all about. It sits right at the heart of Playa--people watchers, this is the place for you. Every night live nice, hot Cuban music and free drinks for ladies until 1am. Free entry and cool looking place. Just dont understand why the music HAD TO BE SO LOUD! That is the reason why we visited this club twice only. I totally recommend this place if you dont mind almost loosing your hearing.. Theme: Live MusicDirections: 5th avenue, second floor

Inside Alux by whitneyone UPDATED DECEMBER 2003 I just wish you could get an idea of what this place is like. A huge cave you enter from a regular old street. I have no idea why, everytime we have been it's been very quiet. It should be packed with people due to its amazement factor. In additon to some live music, the food we had was good, I highly advice the Cream of Chaya Soup. I'm not a big fan of Chaya, but this was amazing. Good Ceaser salad, average cheesecake. We just went in for a drink, but ended up witha bit of good food.
Playa del Carmen is still VERY casual, but if you wanted to dress up here, you could, within reason. No suits or ties or cocktail dresses, but something above shorts would work nicely. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Revolution Ave about 5 blocks up from the 307

Lounge by whitneyone I found this place thanks to another Vt member. I looked everywhere in Playa for the "bed bar" and NO ONE had heard of it. Because they don't even tell you there, what you are getting in to. They call it the Deseo Lounge...because that is what you do. On a roof top there is a small pool, a dj playing a great mix of ambiant music to chill to, and BEDS! You are brought a tray for your bed and a bill for what must be the most expensive drinks in town....10 dollars for a martini, but it was totally worth the price for the experience!
There was something quite european feeling here. People were dressed better, but of course, not OVER dressed. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: The Deseo Hotel on 5thDirections: The sign says "lounge". You walk up a long set of stone steps with no railing and you are in another world. It has a very cool ambiance like "the standard" bar in LA...but less attitude

The Blue Parrot by Blatherwick The Blue Parrot was voted as on of the 10 best bars in the world by Newsweek magazine in 1996. It wouldn't make my top 10 list but it's a cool place to drink at night by the beach. The Parrot has sand floors, swing seats at the bar, a stage for dancing, and a new sitting area with pillows, candles, and carpets. Drinks are reasonable and the crowd is mid to late 20ish. Good times.
Sandals and shorts are the norm. Leave a Comment Theme: NightclubAddress: Calle 12Phone: 984-87-30083Directions: On the BeachWebsite: www.blueparrot.com Other Contact: info@blueparrot.com

this was the late night spot for me and my friend.we went almost every night. this party place really rocks. a bar build like a big pirate boat can really influence your behavior and bring the pirate out of you. everybody there is dancing and sweating, drinking tequila and takes a break on the beach or having a bite at the taco stand outside for more energy and go back inside for more partying. we felt like we were back in our college years, trust me it feels good sometimes. don't go every night or you'll need some vacation eslewhere to rest from that place.it happened to me ... lot's of europeans hang in playa del carmen and for those who likes italian woman trust me. they are easy to spot they are the only girls wearing high heels in the sand. that what we found out and it's true. viva italia. great beach bar...
from quicksilver to dolce gabbana the only thing you need is a party mood. Theme: NightclubAddress: on the beachDirections: not far from the pier an that tower not sure if it is a lighthouse but can't miss it . anyway every body knows where is the capitan.

This is more like the locals nightclub... great house music, every day till 6 or 7 in the morning. The best day is usually on Wednesday, they have a 2 x 1 promotion all night long ... and it gets seriously packed! Love this place!! If you're not really into house music ... upstairs is more like lounge sort of music, more romantic and quiet.
Casual ... Theme: NightclubAddress: 12th Street N btw. 5th & 10th Ave

We went several times to this big bar on 10th avenue. There is two biljardtables and you will most likely get to play against locals. Every time we were the only tourists of the bar what I found fun. On weekdays La Taberna had a happy hour all night long - very cheap drinks! There is also a long line of computers with internet access. The menu looked also very appealing and economical but we never ate there. Theme: Eating and Drinking
