The Mayan City of Coba is located around two lagoons (one of which has some “nice” alligators). The site contains several large temple pyramids, including the tallest one of all Mayan Cities - The Nohoch Mul Pyramid. The view from the top of the Pyramid is amazing; one can see a large area of jungle and the lakes.
The complex also includes two ball courts, much smaller than the one in Chichen Itza. The overall area is very large and you can even rent a bike to visit everything.
Since the city is located in the middle of the jungle, there are many shades and places to rest. If you want to visit the whole archeological site you need a full day. There is a small restaurant at the entry, and also lots of guides offering their services for a small fee.

Coba is an older site of the ancient Maya. The pyramid here has one slope, unlike the later period pyramids, which have four slopes. The place also has the remainders of a road. Actually, Coba had the most complex road system in the whole Mayan world. A lot of the site is still not explored properly.

In the autumn 2006 this was the only place, where it was allowed to climb the pyramid. I tried to climb it, but when I climbed some 20 steps and looked back down I found it quite scary... and it started to rain, so I went back down.

The tour to Coba can be combined with a visit to a Mayan village, which is also quite interesting.

The ruins at Coba are very extensive, and the best way to get from place to place within the area is by bicycle. There are many of them to rent just past the entrance - you can pick out one that is the best size for you. Since the area is flat, and there are wide paths connecting all the places of interest, bicycling is easy. I would not recommend trying to see it all by walking unless you are OK with spending a lot of time and are used to walking in heat and humidity.

For those unable to ride a bike, there are guides who will take you on bicycle cabs.

Take a tour of Coba - it has the highest pyramid to climb, there is several buildings that are in various stages of restoration, and it is in the jungle. You can see a ball court where one side is restored and the other is in it's natural state.
