To get to Tulum from Playa DEFINITELY take a collectivio van. They pick up at the corner of Calle 2 and 20 Ave and leave every 15 minutes or so. Ask and they will drop you right at the road to the ruins (actually, they will drop you anywhere in between playa and tulum if you ask. Pesos only. Many of the locals use to get to work at resorts south of playa. It's about $2.60 US all the way to tulum

Ferries takes you out to the island of Cozumel. The ride takes about half an hour, and costs 10-15 USD for a roundtrip. The ferries goes almost every hour, but they will usually give you a timetable when you buy the ticket. Ticketbooths are all over the city, and they always have a sign telling you when the next boat leaves. The ferry dock is located south at 5ta Avenida. The sea can be quite rough so if you have problems with seasickness it can be a good idea to take a pill before you go.

Buses are quite frequent to and from Playa del Carmen, and they are also quite cheap. They come in all ranges from deluxe buses to small, bumpy buses. It's just one hour on the bus to Cancun in the north, one hour to Tulum in the south, about four hours to the border between Mexico and Belize, three hours to Valladolid and five hours to Mérida.

  • Make sure you get your ticket the day before going to the airport. The first bus leaves at 8:00 and it will take you there in about 50 minutes, so you have plenty of time to catch any flight with two hours in advance.

Althought I didn't have any issues I was advised to get the ticket the day before by the people in the terminal.

Colectivos are a great inexpensive way to get from Playa del Carmen down the coast to Tulum, Xelha, or Xcaret.

These are shared vans that leave when the van fills up, every 10-15 minutes. The cost to get to Tulum from PDC was 20 pesos, the amount of the fare was tied with how far you went. I think we were charged 15 pesos to get from Tulum to Xelha, I saw other people being charged 10 pesos to go shorter distances. You pay when exiting the colectivo.

Look for the white vans on Calle 2 between 15th and 20th Avenues.

Coming back from Tulum, Xelha, etc., you can stand on the highway and flag them down or look for them near the highway.

According to Lonely Planet, they run from 5 am to 10 pm.

    Ferries to Cozumel

    Updated 12/2004

Ferries run from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel every hour on the hour. The UltraMar ferries currently run from 5 am-10 pm from Cozumel (no service at 6am, 1pm, 7 pm or 9pm) and 6 am-11 pm from PDC (no service at 7am, 2pm, 8pm, or 10pm). The schedule is subject to change so it's best to check in advance if you are not close to the ferry terminal.

There are two different ferry companies, UltraMar and Mexicana, both of which took about the same amount of time (I think it was about 30-35 minutes), left at the same time and cost $180 pesos round trip (around $16 US). There were many booths around the 5th Avenue area that you could purchase tickets and there seemed to be plenty of room, we bought our tickets about 5 minutes before the ferry was supposed to leave.

Ferries can be picked up at the very south end of 5th Avenue at the ferry terminal.

There is a new ferry terminal at Avenida Constituyentes that had an UltraMar booth that said Cozumel on it. We saw a ferry pull up so it looks like it is functional

Mexico is a very big country, and if you plan to do a lot of travelling you should consider taking a plane at least once. The bus from Playa del Carmen to Mexico City takes 24 hours. We enjoyed it so much at the Mayan riviera so our busjourney back was postponed as long as possible. But when we checked the price on planetickets there was no longer any doubt. 24 hours on bus for 500 pesos or 2 hours on plane for 800 pesos...?!? Hard choice... ;) So we stayed even longer and took a plane from Cancun to Mexico City.

Planefares on routes that are highly trafficated can be quite cheap. But if you want to take a route which is not as popular, you might have to pay a lot more. Anyway you should check out the price if you are going to travel long distances. If it's a little bit more expencive it might be a good choice when you think about the time you save. Plus sleeping on overnightbuses can sometimes be a bit difficult.

If you are in or around Playa Del Carmen, and you want to visit Cancun, then the sensible thing to do is to go to the main bus station in PDC where you can take a fully air conditioned bus for 32 pesos (less than 2 dollars) to Cancun each way - the buses leave every 10 minutes. The trip takes approximately one hour and you can get off in the hotel zone or downtown. I wasn't sure which to get off at and got off downtown, where I caught the R1 bus which loops around the hotel zone - the cost is a meagre 6 pesos!

  • Waiting at the airport - Playa del Carmen
    Waiting at the airport
    by Dabs
I've found that the best deals for Mexico (and most beach destinations) from Chicago and many other US cities is to book a package that includes airfare, hotels and transfers to and from the airport.

The two companies from Chicago that used to do it the best were Apple Vacations and FunJet. I have used both several times with no problems. The last two times I've used Expedia who contracts locally through Best Day tours for their transportation and tours.

Downsides to using package tours? No major ones but you do have to wait at the airport until they have rounded everyone up delaying your beach vacation for a bit. And they seem to take you to the airport awfully early but if you want to pay a few extra $$$ you can just tell them that you're arranging for your own transfer.

Sometimes you will get on a charter flight and the planes are not the most comfortable but I can endure anything for 3 1/4 hours (well, maybe not the kid that was screaming and kicking the back of my chair).

Funjet can either be booked with a travel agent or online at www.funjet.com. Apple Vacations, although it looks like you can book online, can only be booked through a travel agent. The website at www.applevacations.com can be frustratingly slow. Expedia can be booked online or via the phone, I found slightly cheaper prices by picking up the phone and talking to an agent.

  • All the major rental car companies are located in the cancun airport. Really, do yourself a favor and rent a car! We're VW bug fans, but since it was so hot we rented some kind of toyota from thrifty...the VW's don't have AIR! Our cost? 22 bucks a day. Total cost for four days was still less expensive than two people taking the shuttle to and from Cancun.

The "collectivos" are a good way to get from playa to other beach areas...problem is, they drop you off on the main highway. So you can end up walking a good half mile or more to get down to the beach. Parking is free everywhere.

The main highways are in GREAT shape. The Pay roads are in GREAT shape.

The only time you'll hit bumps, holes, etc are on dirt roads getting to some beaches or visiting villages inland...and oh, DO look out for 'topes". The are clearly marked and tell you you are c oming up on a village so slow down! You really have no choice. If your journey gives you the choice of a free or toll road, only take the free road if you have BUNDLES (as in HOURS) of extra time. Lots of villages. Lot's of Topes. We missed a flight once trying to take in some local color!!
