The two competing companies, Ultramar and Mexico Water Jets, have booths right across from each other in both Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, check to see which one is running next. No point in buying a round trip ticket, since each company runs every other hour, you'll want to have the choice of which to take back.
There ride takes 35-40 minutes and there is plenty of room on the ferries, a small outside section and a larger indoor section. Really no difference in the two lines so it doesn't matter to me which one we take. Ferries can be picked up at the very south end of 5th Avenue at the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen.

The seas were rough during the Ferry ride to Playa del Carmen. We sat near the bathrooms and there were a lot of sick people waiting in line. However, the rough seas were nothing compared with what we faced later that night.
The Ferry ride to Cozumel was death defying. True to our natures we were cracking jokes the whole way. In reality, we feared for our lives. The 30 minute trip lasted about 2 hours. The tiny ship was tossed. I really thought we were going down. Luckily, comic relief in the form of a woman selling jewelry and blankets took our minds off inevitable doom. We imagined scenarios of her persitant selling as we sank into the deep dark depths which were waiting to engulf us. It took my mind off death until Cory pointed out the pitch-black, ominous cloud that seemed to be getting closer and closer to the water every minute. It was a forming tornado or a waterspout.
You can see in the pictures how quickly it got dark. I was too terrified to take any pictures of the cloud but now I wish I had. It was amazing.
