Getting to or away from Puerto is easy pezzy. Bus Lines ADO or Mayab service the area. The ADO line is a bit more expensive but they do offer toilets on the bus. Mayab is th eless expensive line and doesn't offer toilets. They are on different schedules, so that may be a concern as your traveling. You will be dropped off at the highway and you can catch a taxi the two Kilometers into town, walk or take a mini bus for a about 10 pesos. It varies. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

We decided to rent a car to get around the area. We looked at many companies and picked econocarrental. We are supposed to pay $49/day + 10 % vat. .... $380 for a car for a week......that is more than we paid in Greece or Spain....but hey.....it is Mexico We were picked out from the airport by a young, nice mexican guy with good english. We went about 5 min drive to the office where we filled out all the paper work. We were offered additional insurance (covering $1000 deductible) but we denied. We got our rollerskate - Hyundai ATOS. The car was very slow, we were not able to drive faster than 110 km/h.....everybody in Mexico drives double the speed limit, so we felt like losers in our little slog. The company ECONOCARRENTAL was very nice. On the end they drove us to the airport and helped with the bags. I would definitely recomend the ECONOCARRENTAL but I would pick bigger car like VW LUPO.

colectivo by call_me_rhia To get to Puerto Morelos from Cancun or Playa del Carmen it's easy and inexpensive. Just hop on a colectivo heading that way and ask the driver to let you off at Puerto Morelos. of course, being a shared minivan service, it will not take you directly into Puerto Morelos, but it'll leave you along the main road, at the junction with the Puerto Morelos road for about 20 pesos. The town is about 2-3 kilometres away - but there are always taxis waiting at the junction, to take you into town for a small fee (again about 15-20 pesos). Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Take the R-1 from the hotel zone 65 pesos/.65 cents, tell the driver bus station. Try to stay in the front so he can call to you. go across the street. Nice clean bus station with immaculate bathrooms ( according to my wife, which is high praise ). 3 pesos plus 1 peso tip, a dime. Go to the leader board and find your destination on the Adobus. Puerto Morelos is 19 peseos/$3.04 round trip, get round trip ticket. When you get there go to the right for a taxi to the beach 20 pesos/$1.60. $2.00 us includes tip. You pick up a cab at the same place he drops you off. When you get out, just to the left is where you pick up the bus. If your the only one there just raise your hand out when the bus comes, he may blink his lights to ask if you want to be picked up. Raise your hand like your hailing a cab. "Primera Clase" These de luxe or pullman buses are equivalent to Greyhound with reserved seats and baggage check. They also have toilets and TV although the TV's sometimes are not used or the TV show is in Spanish. Bring your own TP. Leave a Comment

In front of pyramid at Chichen Itzu by karenincalifornia The Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are only about one hour away from Puerto Morelos. Everyone who goes of course has to have his or her picture taken in front of the pyramid! We risked life and limb by climbing that thing. To this day, climbing up and especially down, is one of the scariest things I've done in my life. The steps are narrow and steep and there is no handrail, only a chain strung down the middle. I had the weirdest sense of vertigo on that pyramid, and I'm not prone to vertigo. I did it only because I didn't want to spend the rest of my life regretting that I had not climbed the pyramid. I really don't know if I could do it today if I were there now. I guess I just have fewer regrets nowadays. Leave a Comment

Chichen Itza by karenincalifornia A lot of mystery shrouds the Mayans and the ancient city of Chichen Itza. While the precise dates differ, depending on which source you consult, the history goes something like this: Between 500 A.D. and 900 A.D., Chichen Itza was the site of a prosperous and large Mayan community. It was abandoned in 900 A.D., and then somewhat resettled in 1000 - 1200 A.D., this time with a Toltec influence. The Mayans never regained their former prosperity. The civilization dwindled and the Mayans completely abandoned the city for good in 1500 A.D. The reason for their dramatic decline and ultimate disappearance is speculative, at best. It could have been due to disease brought by European explorers, slaughtering of the natives by the Spanish, tribal wars, or all of the above -- no one is absolutely certain. In this picture, you will see the Temple of the Jaguars and Eagles, as seen from the top of the Pyramid. Behind the Temple is the Ball Court. Most of the major Mayan sites have their own Ball Court. The ruins of Chichen Itza show that there were 13 such ball courts at this location. The ball games played here were rather gruesome. Players played to the death, although the object of the game isn't known today. It was possibly played to punish the losers by death. Or it was played to sacrifice winners to the gods. Either way, Mayan ball games make US Major League Baseball seem mild in comparison -- assaults on the players by fans notwithstanding. Leave a Comment

Beach at Puerto Morelos by karenincalifornia One of our favorite activities in Puerto Morelos was snorkeling. We rented gear at a tiny dive shop in the center of town. The shop also hooked us up with a guide. Much to our delight, we were the only people going out with him, so we had our own private guide. Things got even better when we noted that he was one of the few males in town NOT wielding a machine gun. The guide took us out in a little motor boat to the coral reef right off the beach. He showed us beautiful coral, tropical fish, sea urchins, eels and other marine life. The water is very warm, even in January. What a pleasant way to spend an afternoon! This picture was taken when my husband and I were walking along the beach at Puerto Morelos on our way to the dive shop. See that lonely white building? That was the condo complex we stayed at. The one that is now a nudist resort. I have no idea if the place is still this remote or whether there has been new development. I haven't been back since 1994. Leave a Comment

Carvings at the top of the pyramid by karenincalifornia The top of the pyramid is covered with ancient Mayan carvings. I dutifully spent a long time contemplating the carvings, rather than thinking about the fact that I would have to, at some point, descend down the pyramid. I read that the Mayans used to punish people by throwing them down the pyramid. I tried not to think about this little historical tidbit either while I was at the top of the pyramid. Leave a Comment
