La Petita is located one block from the beach and one block from the square. It is a small colorful building, where all the cooking is happening surrounded by a white sand yard where all the tables are. The best time to eat at La Petita from 12 pm to 3 pm (after 4 pm the place is full of mosquitos since it is sunset) La Petita is always full of people and sometimes you have to wait for the table, but it is really worth it. The staff is very busy, but nice and efficient. You come, you sit, you order, and they will bring it as soon as it is ready. Very often you will also have a local live music at La Petita. And you can also see the local walking 7-11 or dessert guy with really good stuff (we liked local coconut in toffee).
My favorite dish at La Petita was......oh, JUST LOOK AT THE PICTURES!!!!!! hehe #1 - whole fried fish - bocarete #2 - caracol or octopus ceviche #3 - guacamole of course Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average

Tio's is a small local place right by the pier and supermarket. Tio's looks like it would not pass the sanitary inspection in any other country, but it is a great place to eat for local people and travelers (not the tourists!) People who go to Tio's are.... Tio's kind of people.
Since we are semi-vegetarian we did not have famous chicken soup, but I tried Tio's famous chicken tamales, and ......I am telling you....one day I will go back to Tio's just to have them again!!!! We also liked the huevos rancheros, fish in garlic and oil sauce and off course horchata (almond water). Most of all people go to Tio's for .....Tio - the owner. He is great, and if you know at least 3 spanish words Tio will became your friend forever. Palapa Pizza had a lot of diffent choices. It was on the main plaza, within walking distance from our villa. Come to think about it, most everything was. Check out that mural on the wall. Don't ya just love it? Leave a Comment

Mimi is a great local Loncheria opened Tuesday to Saturday located away from bustling Puerto Morelos square. The place is run by a local family. They speak only Spanish but we had no problem ordering what we wanted. Place is sparkling clean, REALLY SPARKLIN CLEAN!!! Food is fresh, and made to order. There is only four tables but you can take take-out. The menu is hanging on the wall (see picture) and is very simple.
Everything is delicious in Mimi. We ate breakfast and lunch. See pictures of our dishes. They also have fresh natural juice (every day different one) so ask them for jugo naturale. There was a great Sunday buffet at Padado Amor. This was served in a thatch-roofed restaurant beside the hotel by the same name. Leave a Comment Theme: BuffetPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average

We ate at this restaurant on the waterfront, several times in the week that we were there in the village. Very good seafood. Pleasant owner. Leave a Comment Theme: SeafoodPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average

Open grilles cooking everything from pork ribs, chicken, fish and other seafood. The smell of the food cooking over the Yacatan wood coals makes my mouth water even when full.

This restaurant is all about eating locally caught fish with locals and Mexican tourists in a small town's best known fish restaurant. We arrived about 4:00 pm and by the time we left all of the other 15 or so tables were occupied. There are a few tables inside, but most are outside in the back on cleanly swept dirt under shaded palm roofs. We were directed here by a the local hotel owner at the Villas Latinas, a couple blocks away. Like everyone else, we simply ordered a plate of "fish" ("pescado") and beer. The whole lightly fried fish came out about 15 minutes later. Big fluffy white chuncks of mild, tasty "mero" (grouper) . . . delicious (don't forget to pry off the cheek meat, its the most delicate). We were in town about three days and whenever we passed by in the afternoon, the place was busy with people waiting their turn for a table.
There's only one . . . fish. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: 1/2 block north of the main plaza

This little spot may not be for the weak of heart, when it comes to eating Mexican food. However, we ate here a couple of times and had no ill effects. In the evening, they have a hip of beef roasting in a cart on the sidewalk, and the locals all came by for various tacos, etc.
We came here the night we arrived, and bought tacos and tortillas to take back to our house. The food was very good, and cheap. We also came for breakfast, which was also cheap, and was the food the locals ate. Ok, you're right. Thi is the same photo I used for the grocery store in our shopping tips. However, the restaurant is upstairs, groceries downstairs. It is a spacious restaurant, with a large deck. However, since it is right next to the lighthouse, there is not much of a view.
This place has a mix of Mexican and American food, and all that we tried was good. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: North side of the Town Square, above the grocery store
