San Miguel de Cozumel Things to Do

  • Dive, Dive, Dive

In 1998, my husband and I went to Cozumel to dive. That's the main reason to go to Cozumel as far as I am concerned. He took a PADI Open Water course, at Papa Hogs, and I went diving while he did it. This was my first experience with drift diving - it is the Giana Current which flushes out the reef and makes for excellent visibility (100 feet plus)...

If you are going to Cozumel you must go on the Dune Buggy Tour. It was so fun! My family and I went last month and it was the best day and tour of all of our cruise ship stops. It costs $89 each, and it was worth it! Other tours I went on cost 50% more, were half as long an did not include a lunch like this one. It was wonderful and let me add,...

Senor Frog's is a tourist favorite for fun in Cozumel. It is world-famous for its party atmosphere and lively staff. There is music and dancing, shot lines, DJ's and live bands, and plenty of food and drink.

It is open daily at 11am and Sundays at 7pm.

San Miguel de Cozumel Transportation

  • Bike rickshaw

The bicycle guys will take you from the ship to the stores at the end of the dock for a tip. It would be about a dollar. This is a good option for someone who has trouble walking.

  • The Plane

Since Cozumel is an island, there are two ways to get there - by air and by boat. I took a little puddle jumper from Cancun. I got a free ticket on Delta to anywhere in North America by taking a voluntary bump. Currently there are flights to Cozumel on American, United, Air Canada, US Airways and Delta airlines

San Miguel de Cozumel Shopping

The best shops in all of Cozumel featuring top-of-the-line jewelry, crystal, clothing, fragrances, souvenirs, and more are located along Avenida Rafael Melgar. This is the waterfront road in San Miguel.

Most shops are open from Monday through Saturday 9am-9pm.

What to buy: Cozumel is the leading port in Mexico for jewelry. There are all kinds of bargains on precious stones, diamonds, tanzanites, gold, and silver.

Liquor is also good to buy here.

There are actually three cruise ship docks. The majorly preferred one - Punta Langosta is the one that is located right downtown opposite the original lighthouse. After leaving the ship and walking down the dock (either avoiding or patronizing the photographers at the end of the gangplank (photo 3), you will go over an overpass (photo 4) into a shopping mall. You are right in the heart of downtown Cozumel. The other two piers, TMM International Pier (photo 5) and the Puerta Maya Pier are both a good seven to ten minute taxi ride to town.

We went off on an excursion. When we came back we browsed through the sights at the end of the dock. The locals come there to meet the ship and perform. We were there on Christmas Day, and there was a nativity scene (photo 2). Or you could have your photo taken with this big boa instead of the ship photographers.

When riding scooters in San Miguel, here are some rules of the road you should know:

    1. Roads that run parallel to the sea are avenues and have the right of way. Roads that run perpendicular to the sea are called streets and you must stop at each block.

    2. Wear a helmet at all times.

    3. Watch your speed.

    4. Be aware of one-way streets.

Drive around the Island. Do not miss this activity. It makes the trip. Cars rent from 35 to 45 dollars a day. Taxi is $5.00 each way to town and $10.00 each way to airport. You will spend cost of car in no time.

Rent and drive around it is great

  • Snorkeling/Diving

Along Avenida Rafael Melgar, you should find a few diving and snorkeling outfits, but the best locations are on other parts of the island. If you are pressed for time and need to get back to the cruise ships, this might be a decent option.

When we first went to Cozumel to dive in 1998, there was a cruise ship dock but it was the pier that was south of town. We would dive and then come home and walk to a restaurant for dinner. One of the places we would walk to was out along the waterfront, and we would see this lighthouse. At that time it was an active lighthouse. In 2007, we came by...

One of the things the founding families of Cozumel really did right was to construct a broad sidewalk along the waterfront next to the sea wall. The seawall which is frequently white washed and trimmed in aqua has cement benches built into it.The best time for a walk is in the early evening, cool, sunset, all the shops will be open until 9ish. • The best of the best.

The people here are wonderful. I have read some tips here and they are misleading! The people are very friendly, they also want you to spend your money with them. They thrive on tourism and since the huricane and now the US economy tourism has suffered. If you don't want to buy what they are selling, a polite no thank-you is all that is required....
