Found in the Scrub by the Caribbean Cliffs by emilienoelle Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about flowers. I have huge tattoos of flowers, a garden full of flowers (when the temp. here is hovering above freezing) and so I'm here to say that the Yucatan has some of the most amazing indigenous flowers I have ever seen. You can miss them if you go too quickly so slow down, drink your dacqueri, and look at all the beautiful things that are surrounding you. (Do this anyway, even if not in the Yucatan.) Leave a Comment

Iguana at the Tulum Ruins by emilienoelle Iguanas roam freely all over the place here, so don't be too surprised when you see one. The good news is that they are rather friendly and sweet. They are vegetarians, too, so there is no worry of being bitten by one. It is also a nice idea to watch for them while you are driving. They are fond of sunning themselves in the road. Before leaving for Tulum someone told me that there were no ATM's in Tulum, but in fact there are 3. There are 2 in the small town of Tulum itself and one located on the grounds of the Tulum Mayan Ruins. When taking out money keep in mind that there are about 10-12 Pesos to 1 US dollar. Cenote at Sunscape Resort by emilienoelle Cenotes (pronounced SeeNoTays) are underground rivers which come to the surface as they prepare to join with the Caribbean Sea. They can be found all over the Tulum area. Cenotes are true marvels of nature. They are also from where the ancient Mayans got fresh drinking water, allowing their civilization to become highly advanced thousands of years ago. There are many parks which allow you to swim and snorkel in the cenotes (Xel-Ha, X-Caret, Hidden Worlds) and to enjoy the abundance of sealife that live in them (fish, crabs, turtles, rays). In fact, being in a cenote is a little like swimming in a tropical fish tank. My favorite thing about the cenotes though is that they are cold! They are the best places to swim and cool down from the jungle's heat. They stay cold all the time due to the fact that they are fed from underground. We were especially lucky because the Sunscape Resort where we stayed had its very own cenote. Very nice! Leave a Comment

Children's Pinata Party by emilienoelle If you think that you can't travel here with little kids, think again. Many people do it. In fact, Tulum's resorts cater mostly to families with children. Often there are activities offered especially for children, allowing parents some well-deserved time to themselves. A web search of hotels in Tulum will tell you which places offer these services. Papaya Playa Beach by LoriPori After touring the ruins, perhaps you might want to enjoy the lovely beach PAPAYA PLAYA. Many people brought their swimsuits and relaxed in the picturesque surroundings of the beach. There is a stairway leading down to the beach so you don't have to worry about getting over those steep cliffs. Leave a Comment

Palm trees on the Beach by emilienoelle I had always envisioned palm trees as being the picture-perfect things that you see on Corona commercials, and they are like that from a distance, but up close they are pretty ratty. It makes sense when you condiser the harsh conditions that these trees must survive: little water, extreme heat, high winds. But hey, a ratty palm tree sure beats no palm tree at all! Leave a Comment

Getting her picture taken by LoriPori As you are leaving the square and heading towards the ruins, on your right there were three young men in ceremonial dress. Their costumes were absolutely beautiful especially the head-gear. Many people were attracted to them and had their picture taken. There was no posted charge but they did have a "Tips" jar. It would make a nice souvenir of your visit to Tulum. Leave a Comment

An Iguana by LoriPori Although most ladies are terrified of these creatures, I think IGUANAS are pretty cool. There were lots of iguanas spotted in the ruins area. This fellow was actually posing for us and seemed quite used to crazy tourists like Hans and I, chasing after him just to get a picture. Note how they easily blend in with the environment.
