I think Don Cafeto is one of the oldest established restaurants in Tulum. I first visited this place years ago when there were only a handful of restaurants open in the downtown. Since then there have been many fancier restaurants open, but Don's always stays popular (with both locals and tourists). The service is quick and the large menu consists of mostly traditional Mexican dishes.
The great location allows you to watch people passing by Tulum's main drag.
The portions are large, served hot, and you get a lot for what you pay for--a big basket of nachos with salsa and pickles comes as a complimentary appetizer for your meal.
Don't eat the green habanero peppers that are mixed in with the pickled carrots. It's a very bad idea.
Be sure to check out the crazy bathrooms--you'll think you took a wrong turn and ended up in some alley.

Chicken tacos, hamburgers, fajitas. The tacos are great--smothered with cheese and sour cream. If you like the traditional "mole" sauce, there are several dishes served with that too. And many fish dishes.

El Marriachi: Strongest Margarita in Town!

It's an open-air bar with a live dj (the music is pretty cheesy American/Mexican) The food was excellent, pretty traditional Mexican fare. The best part was the margaritas. They knock your socks off! One night around 11pm the marriachis actually rolled up and played a few songs. The were a bit disheveled and we had a strong suspicion that they all were pretty wasted. This made the evening only that much more hilarious!

The carnes platter for 2...best fajitas in town!

Excellent, authentic Mexican cuisine. We were the only touristas there, it appears to be a local joint. The place is painted a rather vibrant orange which sounds bad but it just makes it incredibly cheerful once you adjust to it. There was plenty of food, the staff was great and IT WAS REASONABLY PRICED! Try the chicken mole, it's awesome. We got a mango drink, made with good water in a blender as you watch, apparently this is one of their specialties. Ours was safe and not bad; I think it depends on the fruit. We had the extra bonus of a Mexican Western playing on the t.v., which added to the fun (graveyards, sombreros, evil women, sensuous men). Added bonus, they were very nice to our kid!

The Chicken Mole was tender, the sauce was really exceptional and it was served with rice, beans, etc. so it was a full meal.

I was told my the locals that Don Cafeto's was a great place to eat, and they were absolutely right. The food was excellent and the prices were good not overpriced. The ambience in the restaurant is very lively. Don Cafetos cateres to tourist so you find people from all over. I would surely go back to try more of their dishes.

Shrip Cocktail, served a little different from what I am used to but delicious. My husband had tacos de carne azada, heavenly.

After spending the big bucks on a touristy place we love finding where the locals eat. we think we found one on 307 in tulum, just south of the ruins. el Mariachi. Really friendly people, really good tacos al pastor, good limey guacamole and great salsas. Muy Caliente!! Look out! so good!

  • We didn't like the selection of restaurants on the road to see the ruins so we hopped in a taxi and headed to the town of Tulum about a 5 minute cab ride away.

Don Cafeto's is right on the highway.

The queso fundido was pretty tasty.

  • This tiny little restaurant is clean, sparse and a refreshingly modern little spot run by a fantastic couple. The food was amazing and a value to boot. It's a great change from the (also stunning however) fish of the neighboring places. Rosemary scented lust is what I remember. soooooooo good.

They had a simple but complete menu. We both had the fish as I am addicted to the fresh offering. rosemary and fresh herbs in abundance made it a nice change from the mexican spices and garlic/butter of the competition. The slow roasted potatoes were perfecto.A rich soup started us off followed by an amazing salad, herbed fish fillet and roasted vegetables with roasted potatoes and a dessert boasting totally amazing chocolate sauce.

The food is one set price for the whole meal and all courses and impossible to beat.

  • Don Cafetto is about the food, not ambience. This place (located in Tulum pueblo) is always busy, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The food is good, and don't pass up the salsa -- It's spicy and delicious. We ate and drank way too much here, and still only managed to spend about US $10 each.

Try the "Mexican Plate" -- your basic combination dish with 3-4 different tastes.

El mirador is a small restaurant about 500 metres from the ruins of Tulum which also rents simple cabanas. The restaurant is located above the beach and, although simple (and admittedly apparently not very clean) it serves delicious food. Service is relaxed - try to place your order when the restaurant is still empty, or you'll be waiting for ages.

The grilled fish and the fajitas were good, but remember to try the burritos... a real tasty experience.

Just a no-frills open air taqueria on the side of the road as you drive by Playa del Carmen on the highway (opposite Calle 8), but Loney Planet said the shrimp tacos were to die for and they were SO RIGHT. I wish we'd been hungrier because the ceviche cocktails (in big parfait glasses) looked excellent as well. Very cheap...a great bargain.

We only had the shrimp tacos, but the shrimp was so delicately fried, not greasy at all.
It's a simple dish, but often those are the best. The salsa that came with chips was very simple and tasty as well.
