Tulum - Ruins (2004) by Kaspian The Tulum Ruins were a walled-in city state fortress that developed around 564 AD. It is a fascinating site because the main building (the Castillo) looks spectacular as it sits perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. It's the one they use in all the commercials for Mexican travel. "Tulum" means "wall" in Mayan, and you can still walk the outer edges of the wall around the site. The beach area inside the walls is where Maya ships and canoes used to come ashore when the fortress acted as a seaport. The primary god here was the diving/descending god. The architecture and designs are not as impressive or intricate as those at Chichen Itza, less strong materials and somewhat crude designs, but Tulum is definitely worth the visit if you're in the area. They say Tulum's the most visited of the Mayan ruins, but I don't believe them. There's always been more people at Chichen Itza from what I've seen. The admission was only about $5 USD. There are guides available on site if you want to pay for that. The washrooms (which used to be pay bathrooms) are now free. You will probably save about $60 USD per person by doing his trip on your own with coach buses instead of through a tour from your Cancun hotel. (It's not a full day excursion, like Chichen Itza.) Leave a Comment Directions: Turn left at the Tulum ruins access road at the junction (before you get to the village of Tulum) on Highway 307. There is a new bus stop there, a gas station and several small restaurants. The ruins are about 2 km in through the access road.Website: http://www.info-tulum.com

...And I don't mean that tiny little thing at the Tulum Ruins. I mean the real deal, 7 kms of white sand as fine as icing sugar that sticks to your skin and neon-blue water so clear and clean it tastes almost as sweet as it does salty on your lips. Hands-down the nicest beach I've ever hung out on. This is a must see! Thinking back later about the Tulum beach will bring tears to your eyes. Walk down the coastal road beside the ruins about 20 minutes until you come to the entrances to the cabana beach properties on the left, "El Mirador" is one of the first ones you'll see. Descend to the beach from here and admire the great view from atop. You can access the beach by walking through any of the cabana places. If you visit the ruins and don't go that extra one kilometre to see this, you will have missed the real Tulum. Bonus Tip: "Diamante K", the fourth set of cabanas, was the Mexican "pit-stop" on the first season of "the Amazing Race". Lori looking at Temple of the Wind by Waalewiener This is a fantastic view looking at the Temple in the Wind way up on that high cliff ,it looks awsome . The Mayas traded their goods and the things they made with other area in the Carribean like Guatemala and El Salvador or else for central Mexico and other area in what are today Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia. Fishing boats and trading vessels arrived and departed probably from an easily accessible cove seen below between the Castle and the Temple of the Wind area . Tropical fish and Turtles at Xel-Ha by emilienoelle Located off of Mexico 307, Xel-Ha is a collection of cenotes (underground rivers which come to the surface as they meet the Caribbean) which are full of beautiful tropical fish. For the admission price you can stay here all day swimming, eating, snorkeling, and hanging out with dolphins in one of Xel-Ha's many dolphin swimming areas. If you come here, come early because it gets VERY crowded and if you want to swim with dolphins I recommend making reservations on the web before you go because the tickets for that always sell out. Again, I recommend driving as opposed to taking a tour bus. Also, if you have smaller children and don't want to go snorkeling you can take a tube ride down one of Xel-ha's gorgeous tropical rivers. Keep in mind that conventional sunblock is not allowed here because it harms the fish, so you will have to purchase a packet of biodegradable sunblock when you get here. Don't try going without! Temple of the Wind by LoriPori Right below El Castillo to the North there is the TEMPLO DEL VIENTO The Temple of the Wind, a small, single-roomed structure, standing on a round stone platform. It is believed to have been dedicated to Ehecatl, the god of wind. This incredibe sight of the temple against the turquoise waters of the Caribbean is perhaps the most photographed site of the ruins. It's simply breath-taking. Leave a Comment Address: Tulum Ruins -- 63 km south of Playa Del CarmenDirections: Access off of Highway 307 81 miles south of CancunWebsite: www. infotulum.com

Tulum Ruins by LoriPori There is a wall that surrounded the city on three sides, the fourth having been left open to the sea. The wall, sometimes 16 feet high, may have been built with defense in mind, but it is more likely that its prime purpose was to enclose the ceremonial and administrative zone, thereby distinguishing it from the residential enclaves that spread out along the coast towards the north and south. Tulum Ruins Open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - winter 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. - summer Entry fee ---38 pesos or $3.80 U.S. Video camera fee - 30 pesos or $3.00 U.S. Train to ruins --20 pesos or $2.00 U.S. Leave a Comment Address: Tulum Ruins -- 63 km south of Playa Del CarmenDirections: Access off of Highway 307 81 miles south of CancunWebsite: www. infotulum.com

El Castillo by LoriPori The main temple EL CASTILLO looks spectacular as it sits on the edge of the limestone cliff, overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. If you face the Castillo from the front, the Templo del Dios Descendente, Temple of the Descending God, is on your left. The descending god, depicted above its narrow entrance, appears all over Tulum as a small, upside-down figure. His exact meaning is not known. He may represent rain, lightening or the setting sun. Temple of the Frescoes by Waalewiener This is a building with religeous and social importance . The sculptures and paintings give that impression . On the facade above the entrance of this temple is a human figure with its head downwards . In the corners of this building are two stucco masks believed to be possibly of Chaac the rain God. This building has two temples a lower and an upper temple it was probably build in different stages,as many buildings were in these ancient Mayan cities. Temple of Frescoes by LoriPori The Temple of Frescoes TEMPLO DE LOS FRESCOS contains interior murals depicting Maya gods and symbols of nature's fertility: rain, corn and fish. Unfortunately, this section was roped off, so you couldn't get that close to it. Close-up of El Castillo by LoriPori The chief structures are directly ahead of you as you enter, with the Castle EL CASTILLO on its rocky prominence above the sea, dominating the landscape. The accompanying picture portray the main stairway to the top of the Castle. You will notice the degree of deterioration that has taken place over the years and thus it is roped off.
