House of the Columns, Tulum
Another type of residence in Tulum can be seen in the House of the Columns, which is also known as The Great Palace. This building appearsto be one of the largest residential buildings in Tulum. Like all houses in the area is has a small room at the back with its own shrine fpr ceremonial purposes.
Because the ground in Tulum is uneven, all houses of important people were built over stone foundations, which are nearly always preserved and give you an idea about how large those residences were.
In this particular house an interesting detail was found: one of the surviving window sstill has the rings that would held the curtains - this because the Mayan did not have windows - nor doors - as we do.
One of the largest residential structures in the Tulum Ruins THE HOUSE OF THE COLUMNS was originally in the shape of an "L".
The narrow room in the rear has its own shrine and small windows.
House of the Columns was a large building perhaps the largest building of them all.
It was an '' L '' shape building and it was build in stages ,the west part was build later.
