Is it safe to go hiking in the state of Sinaloa...
by Odinnthor
If you are considering a trek through the Mexican state of Sinaloa, please consider the following: I would first suggest that you read up on the recent drugwars in Sinaloa state. The L.A.Times has done an extensive series on the this subject, mostly concentrating on Sinaloa State. It has been pretty harrowing, with street shootouts and mass cop killings. It has been said though, that visitors are relatively safe, as the drug factions try not to disturb what little other business there is in the state. It is also pointed out the 80% of the residents of the state earn their income direct or indirect from the "trade". Of course I am relying on news reports here and often they are invariably biased. However having travelled through the state, I can attest to the troubles there. Do your homework and draw your own conclusions. Be safe and watch your six.
